fripodding review: my beautiful dark twisted fantasy

Buy this album.

The highly anticipated Kanye West album dropped a day earlier than I thought… but it arrived with applause nonetheless. Ever since he released “Power” everyone (who are fans) had been drooling and awaiting the return or comeback, and for good reasons too.

Fortunately, a guy like Mr. West is innovative and all about his fans. So along with the usual build up like any artist would do, with live performances, singles, interviews, he also gave us GOOD Fridays. I’ve spoke about this before, somewhat. I’ve also discussed his “videos.” And it’s only correct to put it that way since “Power” wasn’t really a music video and Runaway was more of a short feature film which featured most of what’s on the album, or at least a taste of some of those songs. I’ll refer back to the short film quite a bit.

But thanks to the Runaway, most of MBDTF is semi-visualized for me. I’ll hear “Dark Fantasy” and I’ll imagine the first scenes of the film including the explosion scene with Kanye walking away with his phoenix. And I don’t have a problem with that. In my opinion, I think that was Kanye’s plan all along. A tip of the hat to you, sir. And I’d be tipping my hat to him a lot due to this album, to be honest.

With rap albums, I take more time to listen to the lyrics because some artists have a very slick tongue and I’ll miss a reference or verse the first few times which may make or break a song for me. But what’s most impressive about this album is the production. This doesn’t sound like a typical rap/hip hop album. Granted, it is classified as one, but had you listened to this same album without any vocals, I dare you to put a genre to it.

Gorgeous” is an alright song. I don’t absolutely love it, but I’ll probably find something to love about it sooner or later. It’s not a song I’d skip over. I don’t really need to talk about “Power” again, do I? We all know that song well. I think I like the remix better these days.

The song that really does it for me is “All of the Lights” which, again, brings me to Runaway. But I gave in and borrowed a copy of the song from the internets for a little while and visualized my own music video for it, taking a few cues from his short film. Musically, I love the triumphant sound of all the instruments involved. Sounds like horns to me and an actual marching band. There is an interlude, or instrumental introduction rather, than now MUST be played before the actual song itself begins. Violins and pianos are featured there. And the guest list of artists… too many to name (I’m just being lazy, but Rihanna, Elton John, John Legend and Alicia Keys to name a few).

Monster” grew on me. This was one of his GOOD Friday songs along with “So Appalled.” Both of these songs can be considered “posse songs” because they feature quite a few people with verses. I like posse songs. I’m not so much a fan of “So Appalled” and depending on my mood; it’s probably one of two songs I’d skip. Like I said earlier, I need to listen to the song a few more times to pick up all the lyrics and determine if I really like it. But this song introduced me to Nicki Minaj… who at this point I’m still not a fan, but she got my attention on this song with an awesome verse.

Devil in a New Dress” was another GOOD Friday song, and at first I didn’t care for it. But after seeing it in Runaway, I’ve warmed up to it. I know the sample is from Smokey, but I keep getting a Marvin vibe. It’s all soul though. This is also one of the songs that scared people thinking Kanye is a Satan worshiper. These are just lyrics folks. Calm down.

Runaway” is the longest track on the album, and obviously get’s the most screen time in the film. Songs like these show his detail and attention to instrumentals. And again, I think of the film when I hear this song (and not his VMA or SNL performance, not that there was anything wrong with them). What he’s saying in the last part of the song with the heavy auto-tune, I couldn’t tell you. It’s also good enough that I don’t really care what he’s saying. I bet those who think he’s Illuminati are thinking it’s a code.

Hell of a Life” is a skippable song to me. It doesn’t really do much for me and reminds me of Late Registration‘s “Addiction” in terms of themes. There’s also a machine gun beat that reminds me of Alicia Keys’ “Try Sleeping with a Broken Heart.” Not a complaint, just an observation.

Blame Game” is a soft yet sad song, and definitely on the vulgar side. But being about a broken relationship, why wouldn’t it be vulgar? Surprise cameo by Chris Rock, earning it that rated R status, in case one was needed.

Lost in the World” is what made Runaway awesome for me. The whole last 5-10 minutes is because of this song and the visuals that accompanied it. However, I also borrowed a version of this song from the internet that was ripped from the film, and there are subtle differences that I’m not sure which I like more just yet. What’s on the album is the completed version. The final product. What’s in the film was still being worked on, I guess. But what’s great about this song is… well… too many things. The short answer is production. “Who Will Survive America” is the next track which is meant to be played right along with “Lost in the World”, like in the film. Or at least that’s the way I see it. Shout out to the awesome Gil Scott Heron.

I overall really enjoyed this album and it’s hard for me to compare it to his past albums, like Graduation and The College Dropout since they all had lives of their own, and existed in their own kind of a world. I can’t exactly figure out this world just yet, other than that of Runaway, but my favorite time and place to listen to this is in my car.

Like the movie Once, a lot of music I listen to I like to give it the car test–riding around in my car with the volume up high to really hear the music on the road. The other thing I like to do is figure out if the music is more suited for daytime driving, or nighttime driving. For example, happy-go-lucky or every bright sounding songs give me a daytime vibe. It doesn’t mean I can’t listen to it at night, surely I do, but it just fits my mood better during the day. Well, MBDTF is a nighttime driving album. Songs like “All of the Lights” and “Lost in the World” lend itself to being heard while driving in the city being showered with streetlights and/or moonlight. And just for those curious, I think Graduation is more of a daytime album. But while it’s daytime while I’m listening and typing this out, I imagine this taking place at night. Regardless, it’s worth the buy.

escaping african american friday

Looks like I forgot some things you need to do. I wasn’t finished telling you how to survive African American Friday.

Yeah, it looks a lot like this.

Depending on where you plan on waiting, if you plan on waiting, you want to dress appropriately–for inside the store. Usually it’s a warm 72, or whatever the standard is. But if you’re going to be in a 24 hour store and plan to wait and shop for a while, you may want to dress comfortably. I don’t mean come in a shorts and tank top. Most of the veteran black Friday shoppers I see are wearing sweat suits, track suits, and of course the standard jeans and a hoodie.

Brrr.

But most places I will assume is an outdoor waiting affair, so dress with a big heavy coat so when you get inside, you can take off one article of clothing verses dressing in layers. But this is only assuming if it’s cold where you are. It might be raining in my area this year, but like I said, I’ll be inside. And it’s been a very mild autumn so far this year, so I’ll probably have a light jacket just to keep me warm from any slight chill or dry from any rain as I walk from the car to the store… then eventually from the store back to the car.

But waiting outside, people have been known to bring lawn chairs. I don’t know what they do with them once they enter the store, but I’m always paranoid someone will think I stole something I originally walked in the store with… so that’s your call. I’d rather sit on the pavement or lean on the wall.

Traffic is inevitable.

Regarding parking… I consider myself a lazy parker. I will take the first space I see, which might not be the closest. When negotiating traffic on your way out, you’d probably want a spot that has an easy exit… and the parking space closest to the store probably isn’t it. You have to deal with other cars driving by and pedestrians either leaving, entering or lost. Let’s not forget that the people leaving probably have a crew with two carts each full of loot. Honestly, if we all have patience, we’ll get to where we need to go. So make up your mind, do you want to spend time walking to your car? Or do you want to spend time in your car still stuck in the parking lot? I figure both are equally dangerous. But at least as a pedestrian, you have the advantage if a car accidentally runs you and your loot over.

Sadly, even a space close to the exit doesn’t guarantee you will make it out in record time either. Just hope someone will be nice enough to let you get into the line of cars that are possibly at a stop sign or red light to the main road. And yes, I’m trying to think of everything to make sure you have a safe travel.

On a serious note, there have been episodes of being stampeded to death. Is it really that serious, guys? We are not blood thirsty tigers looking for fresh meat. Well… I hope not. Or is this your chance to prove the Darwin Theory is correct? The strongest and fastest win the prize? The scavenging of black Friday makes me think it’s called “bleak Friday” due to the overall generosity and kindness shown to our fellow man once the sale begins.

So I don’t blame people who don’t want to be out for that. In fact, I recommend people just hop on their computers and get similar if not the same deals online. One year, I did most of my Christmas shopping via Amazon.com. I even had them wrap my gifts for me! I woke up around 6am that Friday morning and spent about $200 on everyone’s gifts, then went back to sleep. I did go out to a store much later after the big crowds died down and picked up a few other items. I think it was the fastest I’ve ever done my holiday shopping. Or at least the laziest. But nobody’s complaining. Especially not these guys…

surviving african american friday

It’s that time again–where we gather with our loved ones to share in something a good chunk of America participates in every year, sorta around the same time, same day, possibly the same place.

No, not Thanksgiving dinner. Black African American Friday!

I’ve had experience on both sides of the counter and I’m not sure which I enjoy more. Being an employee, I pretty much just sat back and watched as people went crazy. There was little I could do, to be honest. Other than marvel at the clawing and the gimme gimme gimme of the moment as the clock struck 4:58am. Yeah, we were supposed to wait until 5 on the dot, but you tell that to a bunch of very tired or high strung ladies who had been waiting since 11pm to get whatever it is they’ve been waiting for since the beginning of the week.

Oh, by the way, this took place in a 24 hr store, my beloved The Mart.

This is not The Mart, nor was I waiting outside.

Last year was the first time I hung out as a customer, waiting for a prized laptop gift for my mother. I had to wait in a very long line, which was whittled down to 50 people, since there was only 50 laptops. I was #48. There was tension, to say the least. It didn’t really start until closer to 4am, and definitely by 5am. If the 50 people in line were guaranteed the 50 laptops, why so much stress? As the line started advancing, we kept seeing people ahead of us that we hadn’t seen before. We were afraid people were snuck into the line. That’s right, we were suspicious of snuckers. But in actuality, people were dropping off items to the people in the line so they could make the purchase all at once… which was why I didn’t leave The Mart until close to 6am, which is why we were panicking at the end of the line thinking people were buying more than one laptop.

"Get her!" I'm kidding, this isn't a picture of a fight. Hilarious if it was though.

But let me rephrase myself: I wasn’t panicking. In fact, my fellow shoppers were asking me how I remained so calm. My friends can tell you I’m a very passive and patient person. I mean, c’mon… I stayed on hold for about 10 minutes once.

And getting bent out of shape wasn’t in my plans, and it wasn’t necessary to do so anyway. Sure I was getting annoyed by the end, but that’s because I was getting sleepy. I can’t remember what time I arrived, my guess is about 2am. But I didn’t get home until 7am and I had very little sleep between Thanksgiving foods and getting up around midnight. So my crankiness was due to sleepiness, not waiting in a line for a few hours.

How did I pass my time? Just observing others, joining in with the chatter of what’s going on in the store… and also tweeting.

This year I plan on doing the same. I’ll have company with me so I won’t be completely bored. But I’ll still be tweeting how much fun I’m having waiting in line.

What’s the appeal of the craziness of being out at the butt dimples of dawn? the sales of course! Yes, it’s totally worth it. Most laptops average about $400, $500… but $200? Yes please. I can give up a few hours.

You can actually buy this shirt.

But this is not for everyone. If you’re going to go in for the long haul, be sure to do the following:

  • Drink your coffee, you’ll need the energy
  • Leave your kids at home, they might get damaged
  • Bring a buddy to help you shop or keep you sane
  • Have a game plan-have a meeting place after you get your items or outside of the store
  • Your cell phone is your best friend, besides keeping you stimulated, it helps keep in contact with your team
  • Be friendly, not everyone there is looking for a fight… and the person you’re with might fight for you if it came down to it

If I think of more fun, I’ll be sure to post a part 2 (which I did). If not, follow me on Twitter.

fripodding and the return: “the boys are back in town” thin lizzy

To make a long story short, I welcomed home my best friend (more like a brother) home today after he spent the past few months defending our country in Iraq. I bought him a delicious apple cider and helped him pick out a new phone. I like to say that I have two brothers from other mothers and now we are all back home. (The other one had lived in Philly for a while, I spent a year in New York, and the other joined the Army.) Now we are all back, and before we all went our separate ways near the end of 2004, I declared Thin Lizzy’s “The Boys Are Back in Town” as our anthem once we all get back together again. So let the music play as the three of us unite to wreak havoc on the town. Actually, they are more wild than I am, and I’m usually the spectator when we caused mischief in our hay day. However, I’d still be an accomplice. But besides being bros for life, we all share a common theme with the love of music.

Welcome home Barry.

I’ll give more of a background story to this song another time.

what about your (real) friends?

Yesterday was National Un-friend Day on Facebook. Whether or not you lost any “friends” is a topic all its own, as far as I know, I didn’t nor did I un-friend anyone. I totally understand the purpose of such a day though.

But today, one of my friends got me thinking about real friends. And I don’t think I need to describe what a real friend is or is supposed to be, but those who have them, know what I’m talking about. These are the friends you don’t need Facebook for because you see each other on a regular basis, or talk/text everyday, or would travel to see whether they live in the next town or the next state because they’re worth it.

And what my friend and I discussed was how rarely we might actually tell each other we love them, even if it’s platonic. I’ve been a firm believer that actions speak louder than words, and you can tell when you are loved or cared about by how your friends treat you or how you treat them. I’m blessed that I have so many that I can identify and without hesitation call them by name. I try to be a better friend to them than they are to me as a way to say how grateful I am they are in my life. This also explains why I get them gifts when they tell me not to.

As much as I love to write and talk, I will admit that those three little words sometimes are difficult to say. But it’s worth hearing and confirming that this person means something to you. Right?

I’m not a fan of regrets, and losing someone without getting the chance to say something you should’ve said (even if they already know) is the last regret I’d ever want. So with all of that sentiment, this is just to tell you what you always tend to hear every so often (especially when someone dies): tell those that you care about that you love them. Call them, text them, email them, Facebook, Twitter, whatever. Do it now because nobody knows what’ll happen tomorrow or even 5 minutes from now.

fripodding and proper hearing equipment

A wild and uneducated statistic is that 3 out of every 5 people have iPods… or some kind of a MP3 playing device. If not that, then 4 out or 7 people use some kind of a listening apparatus of some kind. How often do you get to say “apparatus” by the way? I have no hard evidence of how many people use headphones or for what, but chances are, you probably do and just want to make sure you can hear whomever do whatever they are doing.

Lately I’ve been seeing and hearing more about Dr. Dre’s disgustingly expensive headphones called Beats. They are supposedly the highest of audio production on the market hence their hefty price tag. But why oh why Dre, MD must they cost a car payment? And to be honest, I thought it was downright foolish and wondered what the big deal was. Read more ›

a dreamer of dreams

My fellow Indoobians have probably noticed my lack of involvement here on my blog or even on the Internets as of late. A few tweets here and there, but my presence has since been minimal for the better part of the last couple weeks.

And my absence hasn’t been intentional, but probably necessary. A now famous mantra for me is to say “life happens.” And for some reason I can’t fathom, life happens to me in great massive chunks like beef stew ought to be prepared. And kids, I’ve had a rather large serving recently and only the past few days I’ve been able to process all that life has to offer. Read more ›

running away with kanye west

Def Jam/MTV

I could be incorrectly using “Runaway” as a pun for this post, but as a title it works. I’ve watched Kanye West’s short film Runaway twice now and I had to let the images and music soak in before I was able to craft a response to what I have seen and heard. And for the record, viewing this short film is so much better uncut (like on Kanye’s website) than when it aired on TV (which I DVR’d and frowned every time there was a commercial break). fripodding and re-powering up: “power (remix)” – kanye west featuring jay-z and swizz beatz

Technically this song is old news if you are following along with Kanye’s GOOD Fridays. All the songs on his website are free for the taking, so enjoy. Oddly enough, it was difficult to find a YouTube sampling of the remix to stream here, even though I’m sure there are other places I could find the song to stream. Anyway, if you like what you hear, you can get it from Kanye’s website for free (for now). Read more ›

my top 10 most hated movies

Creating this list wasn’t easy to do. Why? Because I had to search deep, deep, deep in my memory of films I’ve seen and truly disliked, hated, and/or made me angry. I have a weird switch in my brain that makes me forget how much I disliked the movie a few days after seeing it, unless it really had a negative effect on my memory that it was too traumatic to block out. So with that said, consider this list incomplete due to not remembering a few movies out there. Also take into account that I haven’t seen every movie ever made, so this list is subject to revision with new movies being made everyday and a plethora of films out that I have yet to see. Furthermore, there are dozens of “bad” movies out there that I found to be tolerable to the fact I would even watch them a second time. There are even a few so bad that they are good, ahem, The Room. But this list contains movies that, given the choice, I would opt out of a second viewing and would consider watching again if given money. Read more ›
