“noah” film review

PhotoGrid_1396077266236Normally I try to write my film reviews as soon as I get home from the theater, half sleepy, partially hungry, and dreading having to go to work the next morning. I also avoid reading other reviews from more accomplished critics so I don’t feel influenced by their views and opinions and begin to adopt them as my own. Well I broke all those rules I set for myself. The reasons are not important but rest assured, it’s a hilarious story that will never be told.

As for my thoughts and opinions on NoahI may write a followup to this particular a review. A good old fashion reflection, as I’ve done with LOST and Breaking Bad where I dive in a little deeper on how I experienced the movie or show on a deeper or different level that just mere entertainment. But for now, let’s stay on the surface and discuss why I thought this movie was very good and dare I say it… EPIC. (Where is Kevin Marc?) Read more ›

“300: rise of an empire” film review

IMG_20140306_210104My friends and family can tell you that I had been a bit reluctant and nearly opposed to the idea of 300 getting a sequel. As brilliant as a glorified historical graphic novel of a film as it was, I thought it was just fine on it’s own as a single work of art, not a franchise. Yet almost a decade later we get Rise of an Empire. And here, I will admit, by going in with little to no expectations, I was pleasantly surprised–nay–entertained!

First of all, to call this just a sequel is an affront to this film. I’m still trying to figure out what word to call it other than a “meanwhile…” kind of a story. Perhaps we can call it a companion piece? Certain parts of the film take place the same time 300 does, so it wouldn’t be entirely fair to call it a sequel. However, the film does pick up pretty much where the first left off, like a proper sequel should. Then it whisks us into the past to show us how the evil Persian god-king rose to power and why he has it out for the Greeks.

place your bets: oscar predictions 2014 [video]

I have a tradition every year, like a handful of other people and a select few that actually get paid to do it, of predicting who will win an Academy Award. Admittedly, I was both busy and lazy when it came to making my picks. I didn’t do as much research as I normally do and I knew I had a deadline. So if I’m apologizing to anyone, it’s the filmmakers that might stumble upon my humble blog thinking I’ll choose them… and apologizing to anyone that’s silly enough to actually make bets on my predictions.

Below you’ll find the nominees and my predictions. Who’d I like to see win will have an askerisk if different from my prediction. Because let’s face it, the people/movies you think deserves it usually doesn’t win. But it’s nice when it does. As always, I’ll be live-tweeting the telecast so follow along with me @indoob. delighting in the details

IMG_20140220_164742I woke up on the indifferent side of the bed this morning. That’s located right on the edge of the mattress, where one foot is on the floor but the rest of you is refusing to cooperate, while the alarm is a freight train tunneling through the canals of your ears. That can describe any morning, but I was more apathetic and slightly irritated than usual which makes it more of a challenge to self motivate and silence the awful concentration of sound pollution that alarm clocks are allowed to produce.

From what I can recall, I can’t say I went to bed in the right frame of mind. Normally, I’m content, or not even thinking about sleep before — poof — Read more ›

the indoob top albums of 2013

The Grammys just happened, but this list really hasn’t anything to do with that. Honestly, I planned to have this list within the first week of the new year, considering that’s when I initially put it together. Constructing this list in some kinda order was easier said than done. But I’ll explain how my countdown works.

First of all, most of these albums can be found (or at one time used to be found) on Spotify, which is my streaming music player of choice. Except for my honorable mention and #11, everything else can  be streamed on Spotify and found on Amazon, iTunes, Google, etc. Out of laziness, I’m not providing links BUT I will supply album covers and tracks to check out!

Second, I rated the albums based on how often I’d play them, how many songs on the album were skipped, and just generally how much I liked the overall piece altogether. Due to this being my list, I do have some bias towards some artists, some were late entries but based on who they were or how much I enjoyed their past music may have moved up the slots considerably. But enough disclaimer, let’s check out the list!

how to make coquito (video)

Before you say anything, I know coquito is a seasonal beverage, typically around the Christmassy holiday but as I expressed in the last post, and as I told to the star of this particular video, I would post it again as I failed to share it on my blog. And even though it’s considered a seasonal thing, it doesn’t mean you can’t make it and enjoy it any other time of the year, right? Right. So enjoy this tutorial (which literally was a spur of the moment idea) on how to make coquito.

Also, traditionally, just like eggnog, alcohol is an additional ingredient. So for those that add it, it’s my indoobian duty to tell you to drink responsibly and have a Merry Day!

“no other option”

Interestingly enough, and a blatant error on my part, I failed to share a few of the projects I had been working on over the last few months here on my website that is supposed to be all about projects I work on. While this video speaks for itself, this was a collaboration between myself and a good friend of mine, professional photographer Ebony B. (I’d link to her website but she doesn’t have one… yet.)

This took place back in October of 2013, and from concept to execution was maybe 2 weeks, maybe 3. While I haven’t spoken to the others involved with this project, I’d like to do a follow up, or maybe even a series of follow ups to document the journey further. In the meantime, if you know of any teen mothers, or mothers-to-be, please share this with them.

Also stay tuned for more collaborations with the lovely Ebony B, who can be briefly heard in this video.

it *will* be a good year

Aside from the polar vortex that is crippling the northern chunk of America lately, most of us have recovered from the holiday season, half way forgotten New Year’s resolutions, and returned to the daily work grind. I actually went back on Thursday, but normalcy returned somewhat today, Monday.

The past year and some change, I’ve been working as a vendor for a home improvement chain. (I’ll give you three guesses, but for the sake of Indoobian continuity I’m going to name it The Depot.) As a vendor, it’s my job to service multiple stores in my area. So twice a week I visit the Depot in Brewster, and twice a day I meet an elderly man named Joe Read more ›

don’t call it a resolution

I’ve never been one to make New Year’s resolutions. Whatever you make up your mind to do, you can make time to do it today rather than waiting until a new year begins. However, I can understand why one would want to start fresh with a fresh new year, fresh new calendar, and a fresh new freshness. Trust me, I get it. Plus it’s hard to start something new in the middle of the holiday rush. But for some goals in life, there’s no better time to start than the present.

I’ve neglected my beloved blog for far too long. I’ve been busy and blah blah blah. Devout readers could probably go back and trace each time I’ve said that in the last few years I’ve kept this blog. But I want to remain committed to keeping to it in 2014. And to do that, I need you, dear Indoobian (if you’re reading this, that makes you an Indoobian), to help me stay on task. I need your comments, your questions, suggestions, so I can produce written, video, audio and photo content for you to further comment, question and suggest to me about. I want… no… I need to post something at least once a week.

I challenge myself to continue reviewing movies, music, award shows and other random musings on every day life, experiences at work, or whatever else I feel so inclined or inspired to do either the written word, spoken word, or some visual medium. So with that said, I hope and pray you all have a victorious, prosperous and productive new year.

what “lost” taught me about “breaking bad”

goodbye breaking badRather than writing a review or recap of the satisfying finale of AMC’s hit Breaking Bad, I decided to share my thoughts and opinions on what some people might be going through, or about to go through. Let’s call it, withdrawal, or filling a void. It’s something that happens anytime a beloved show ends and all fans of that show cope together. I don’t think the 5 stages of grief applies to TV show but this is a start on getting over the sadness of your favorite show ending. Read more ›
