I have a tradition every year, like a handful of other people and a select few that actually get paid to do it, of predicting who will win an Academy Award. Admittedly, I was both busy and lazy when it came to making my picks. I didn’t do as much research as I normally do and I knew I had a deadline. So if I’m apologizing to anyone, it’s the filmmakers that might stumble upon my humble blog thinking I’ll choose them… and apologizing to anyone that’s silly enough to actually make bets on my predictions.
Below you’ll find the nominees and my predictions. Who’d I like to see win will have an askerisk if different from my prediction. Because let’s face it, the people/movies you think deserves it usually doesn’t win. But it’s nice when it does. As always, I’ll be live-tweeting the telecast so follow along with me @indoob.
Best Picture
I’d like to see either “Wolf” or “Gravity” win since I enjoyed the experience more, but “12 Years” was an overall more powerful and important film and deserves the win.
Best Actor in a Leading Role
DiCaprio is long overdue for a win.
Best Actress in a Leading Role
I must admit I haven’t seen Blue Jasmine.
Best Actor in a Supporting Role
All well deserved nods, but Jared won whenever he was nominated.
Best Actress in a Supporting Role
I was told I can only choose one so I’m taking a gamble here. Both my picks were excellent, and I’ve only seen “American Hustle” and “12 Years” but Nyong’o won a few more than Lawrence however the odds are in Lawrence’s favor as the Academy rarely awards a first time nominee.
Best Animated Feature
Best Cinematography
Best Costume Design
It’s anyone’s guess but I’ve read more articles about “American Hustle’s” fashion but I enjoyed everything about “The Great Gatsby.” Traditionally the older the time period the film is set in, the better chances it has on winning. So “The Invisible Woman” and “12 Years” are the “older” films, my 2nd guess if I were allowed one would be “The Invisible Woman.”
Best Directing
I’d be surprised if he doesn’t win.
Best Documentary Feature
This is the only film I’ve heard outside of film circles, and honestly the only one I’m interested in seeing (at the moment).
Best Documentary Short
Sadly I didn’t get to research too much any of the short films. So random picks for these. Sorry to the filmmakers.
Best Film Editing
I always have trouble picking this category. I’m giving this one to “Gravity” because the director was directly involved but without too much guidance or hints, this is anyone’s guess. But I’ll let the record show “American Hustle” could take it just because, but I liked a few cuts from “Dallas Buyers Club.”
Best Foreign Language Film
This is the only film I’m aware of.
Best Makeup and Hairstyling
After much debate, I settled on this choice based not only on Leto’s character’s appearance, but McConaughey’s as well.
Best Original Score
Choice is based on previous awards won.
Best Original Song
I cheered up two people TODAY with Happy. That song started a viral dance revolution. But in it’s own right, Let It Go is insanely popular even though I have still managed to not hear it.
Best Production Design
This was a difficult choice and in my opinion, anyone can win this one, I felt all these films had great production design. If I had to choose, I’d go with “Gatsby” again due to enjoying everything about the film and being marveled by how it looks. But I’d guess “American Hustle” might beat out the rest.
Best Animated Short Film
I chose this based on the title.
Best Live Action Short Film
Sounds interesting based on the title.
Best Sound Editing
Due to “Gravity” being a very technologically advanced film, I’m going to pick them. It could be any of them except “All Is Lost” or the next category’s “Inside Llewn Davis.” Rarely does the Academy give two different movies these two awards. But anything could happen.
Best Sound Mixing
See above. | |
Best Visual Effects
All are CG heavy films, but none so brilliantly done than “Gravity.” Besides that, I’d be split between “Star Trek” and “Iron Man” but I’d want “Gravity” to win.
Best Adapted Screenplay
I really don’t have a clue who would win, I liked “Wolf” but I don’t think it would win. However, “Philomena” and “Captain Phillips” won screenplay awards but even without seeing “Philomena,” I’d think it would have a stronger script. And without doubt, I’m sure and want “Her” to win.
