origins of my optimism

111Optimism-2During an impromptu open forum style meeting at work, my manager declared a phrase that stuck with me for the rest of that day: “Thanksgiving Lunch will be from 12 to 12:45.” He also said: “Always assume positive intent.” In context, he was talking about whenever approached by managers, or even our fellow co-workers, when given criticism or advice about our work, not to automatically assume it’s something bad or someone looking to make us fail. What followed was a discussion about tone of said advice and it’s not always what you say, but how you say it. Respect!

Anyway, assuming and thinking positively isn’t always easy, even for an optimistic like myself. However, I tend to be somewhat of a conflicted, contradicting oxymoron by calling myself an optimistic, cynical Christian. I hope for the best outcome yet still think the worst about some people that I’m supposed to love like my neighbor. Like I said, a contradiction. But even in the bleakest of times, I still look for the brightest of moments. And I always remember, this situation is temporary.

why i write

CMOB8EhUkAAHIy-  I’ve been writing for as long as I’ve known how to read. My family can attest to this as I brought home a new freshly written story almost every other day from school. Most were hand drawn picture books with basic rhyming schemes that told similar stories to the relentlessly read books my parents bought me in my early years. I admittedly don’t read as much now as I did then, but I still have a thirst to consume as many stories as I can to feed my own wild imagination.

However, in recent months, I began questioning my own title as a writer. Not that I stopped being a writer or never was one, but am I producing anything worthwhile reading? Even while I asked myself that, I realized I hadn’t really written anything at all. No poetry, no blogs, no essays, no short stories. Certainly no screenplays. Will I be a fraud for telling people I’m a writer and have nothing to show for it? I also employed the excuse lie that I didn’t have time to write. I was “too busy” with my job, church, and whatever else I was doing that seemed important. I did feel that my creativity was stifled, yet I didn’t put enough of an effort to change it on my own.

Fortunately, around that time, I happened about some kindred spirits that guided me back to the pen. I mean literally, I started writing with pen and paper again, and began crafting poetry, story ideas, and other creations that qualify me to use that skill set.

Me.

I regained my love for words. Not that I ever lost that passion, it had just been distracted by the mundane and mediocrity of everyday life. The same ol’ same ol’. Well, now I’m on the new new. I had since changed my day job (I’m literally starting a new job tomorrow), I’ve been reading books again, and most importantly, I’ve been writing a lot more again.

CNCMzvJVAAEMOYgWith the writing, came the return of my podcast. A good portion of the things I say on the podcast are partially scripted. As much as I love improvising, I still want to get certain information out and in an allotted time. The podcast is an extension of this blog anyway, so whatever I talk about there, I would have written about it here.

Which leads back to why it is I actually write. When I saw this prompt earlier and learning it was National Day on Writing, my very first answer, which is probably my truest answer: I write because I have to. Even as a child, I was terrified to speak in front of people, yet I found courage in writing down what I wanted to say and having it projected on paper, on screen, or by someone louder than I could ever be. I knew then that anything that could make a difference, starts with the written word. Music, movies, laws, poetry, plays, novels, advertising, newspapers.

COGvd3aU8AAuk1FI’m a little better now about speaking in front of large crowds, but the need for me to write has only grown stronger. Writing is not just an escape for me, but a release of energy, self expression, passion. Even if no one reads it and I set it on fire after signing my name, the epitome of catharsis. But most times I’m not just writing for myself, I write to entertain, to inform, to relate, or to reach out to YOU. And sometimes, for me, some things are better left unsaid, and written instead.

indoob! on youtube!

indoobpod2I won’t claim to be an official YouTuber (yet), but still very much a podcaster that is now officially on YouTube. If you haven’t subscribed to the indoob podcast on iTunes or Podbean, you can now follow along on YouTube! I know there are a dozen other podcasting networks and online radio sites I can submit the indoob to, and in time, I’ll get there. For now, my main focus is consistency. I’m working on some related video content, and ideas and guests to bring to the podcast. Where does that leave this blog? It’s still the foundation of the indoob network, of course!

To all my current Indoobians, I thank you for riding along with me thus far. I’m excited to show more things I’m working on. To new visitors, welcome! Maybe I should have started with that? Anyway, enjoy!

burger king’s trick n treat: the halloween whopper

Surely you’ve seen the commercials. Or at the very least, seen pictures either on social media or elsewhere. This year, Burger King decided to freak out patrons by introducing the Halloween Whopper with it’s creepy midnight black bun.

This actually isn’t the first I’ve seen something like this, as the Japanese are always a level crazier than we are, but it is the first time it’s been readily available in our country. Go ‘merica! So, as the somewhat adventurous foodie that I aspire to be, I took the liberty in trying it so you don’t have to. And the “you” I’m addressing is probably 98% of you reading this. I will give you a disclaimer here, that I’ll wait to get creatively graphic at the end results. Because it wouldn’t be a proper review if I didn’t tell you about the whole experience. Read more ›

goodbye, friend: a eulogy from a former fan

DISCLAIMER: I’m not one to make light of a serious and tragic situation, nor am I one that takes pleasure in attacking someone when they’re down, but writing my thoughts and feelings are one of the ways I cope with a loss. The opinions that follow are merely the expressionistic views of a former fan, and please note I’m fully supportive of all victims of rape, assault and molestation.

Recently, I’ve come to terms with the loss of a loved one. Apparently my friend had a sickness long before I was made aware, long before I started out as a child, but other people knew about it and were more or less paid to keep it a secret, or were just too terrified to let anyone know. Reputations, careers and legacies were on the line! Surely, something so terminal couldn’t be released to the public or else we’d definitely be living in a different world. Perhaps a world where we would never have heard of something called “Leonard Part 6.” But I’m getting ahead of myself. Read more ›

prime day or: amazon’s black friday yard sale

CJ_YBGqUYAAXXS-Like most of ‘Merica on July 14th, this year of our Lord, I was pretty excited to participate in the shopping event touted to be bigger than Black Friday, which actually starts on the Thursday before the last Friday of the month of November. Turkeys tend to fear for their lives due to the pre-Black Friday feastings, but I digress. The behemoth known an Amazon: Interweb Warrior announced an all day smorgasbord of sales, savings and deals to celebrate how much of a benevolent dictator it has been over the decades to the citizens of Earth (and the Moon (seriously, look it up)). And they shall call this day–hoping to have it’s own chapter in history books that it will sell on Kindle–PRIME DAY. Read more ›

Click to go to site to hear this episode!

In a perfect world, all links and HTML code would work perfectly and you can stream the episode from this page, AND I’d be available for download or streaming on iTunes… But alas, here we are. In due time.

In the meantime, check out my most recent episode (which will feel like a two-parter when I post episode 7) as I chat we fellow blerd Kortney Hinton about all the many things that keeps her busy, productive, creative, and all around boss role model.

I’ve been having an interesting trend of strong female figures on my podcast: Ariel, Didi, Laura and now Kortney. I’ve got one more coming up soon… but no spoilers until we’re in front of some mics. In the meantime, get inspired and take a listen!

“avengers: age of ultron” – film review

Explosions! Action! Characters! Story! James Spader!

I wasn’t really sure how to jump into reviewing a movie like this so I figured I’d start in a similar fashion that the movie started… minus James Spader. And for the sake of spoiling, I will keep the spoilers to a minimum. Instead, I want to focus on the things I was looking for to be answered in this film after I give a brief summary of what adventures the Avengers get themselves into this installment.

One thing to note, and it was actually a question my dad asked me before I went to go see it: Does Avengers connect to Age of Ultron like an actual sequel? The answer is Read more ›

“a.d. the bible continues” [review]

ADTheBibleContinues_ShowIn a world with many swords and sandals-themed television programming, whether influenced by books or historical events, comes a new series chronicling the stories of the best selling book in the world. Back in 2013, The History Channel brought us a hit miniseries The Bible, and now NBC is picking up where that event left off with A.D. The Bible Continues.

I had the privilege of watching the first episode a few weeks ago, thanks to perks from klout.com (please keep them coming!) and overall enjoyed the presentation. I’ll have to be honest, I didn’t watch all of The Bible even though it’s now on Netflix among other mediums. But the good news is the same production team behind that The Bible, is returning to continue AD, headed up by power couple Mark Burnett and Roma Downey. However, from my research, a lot of the actors have been changed. But that’s something I’ll get into later. Read more ›
