Once again, my DROID has done a wonderful job with providing me with information to an awesome song overheard on the radio. The radio was actually whatever Ruby Tuesdays plays… and this night in particular they seemed to be pretty heavy on John Mayer. Nothing against him, but James Hunter fitted the mood and groove I was feeling that night, and I definitely was curious about what else this guy does. Fortunately, RT played two of his songs. “Mollena” was actually the second one.
I’m actually still dissecting this song, let alone some of the other songs in his catalog, specifically and especially his most recent album. I only had about $15 of money to spend, so I bought one of his albums (which I’ll discuss in 2 weeks) and this song.
What I like about this song, and this artist, is the soulful bluesy-ness. Definitely a Sam Cooke vibe going on, and y’all know if you invoke his spirit in your music, you’re alright with me. This guy also proves that race/color/ethnicity doesn’t matter. I never really thought this was a problem. I mean, Joss Stone anyone? Anyway, regarding this song, it also has a Latin tinge to it. Or is it just me? Sam Cooke did this a few times I’m sure. Unless I’m confusing it with Ben E. King. Either way, I’m digging the relaxed mood this song gives.
Mr. Hunter was so far off my radar it seems like a crime. But hey, I’ll be back to talk about The Hard Way in a couple weeks. You see that? I’m actually telling you ahead of time! I’m not sure what point I’m trying to make there… but just go with it. OR… go check out his album before I review it so we are all on the same page!
