originality: an original origin story about an original originator

With a title like that, I really set myself up, didn’t I? Well I will spoil the ending now: there’s nothing new under the sun.

Yet one can argue that there are no original stories left to tell, which might be a false idea. In fact, I’d be at least one to argue it. As a writer and a storyteller, it’s my personal quest to tell new and creative stories to capture the thoughts and emotions of an audience. And it may be easy to lose that audience once your story falls under familiar been-there-done-that territory. They start guessing what’s going to happen next or even how it’s going to end. Sometimes, that can actually be a good thing, some people like to try and solve a mystery before it’s revealed. And who doesn’t like a good ending where the guy gets the girl? Or the day is saved? Or justice is served?

Surprisingly, there are quite a few people out there that don’t mind seeing the opposite unhappy or ambiguous ending. But I didn’t come here to talk to you about that. I came to tell you my personal mission in this world of storytelling.

My friend Melissa inspired me once again to think about original stories and in turn made me think of my methods of how I come up with my own stories. In my opinion, a few of those stories I have under lock and key (meaning I’m not sharing them so openly) seem pretty original to me. Even if they aren’t, it’s still new to me and if I hear about it before then, I will tailor it so it at least sounds new.

Black Lightning

When I was a kid, I thought up an action hero who was basically super-powered version of myself, cool twists in the hair included. His superpower was electricity manipulation. Now I know what you’re thinking, they already have a Black superhero who works with electricity: Black Lightning and/or Black Vulcan (who aren’t the same person). At the time, I was aware of them. But this guy was different. My superhero, who I named Laze (I can’t remember why I settled on that name) also traveled via electric hover board. Think of Back to the Future II and the Silver Surfer, which I was a little more familiar with at the time if not inspired by. Well, this Laze character was a doodle I drew for quite a while. Those were good times, making up adventures in my spare time in class, drawing action scenes and making explosion noises that matched my doodles and getting strange looks from my teacher. Good times, indoob. Growing up, I eventually retired him. Then one day, while watching Kids WB, I saw this show:

Imagine my shock, pun unintended. It felt like an idea of mine had been ripped right out of my head and put on TV. What were the chances? Well I later found out that this was yet another comic book hero that predated my inception of Laze. But still, even if it didn’t, I didn’t have the means or connections to get my idea off the ground and to an audience. You have to admit, getting noticed has become easier thanks to the Internet. With the same token, it’s also harder because so many people are on the Internet trying to get noticed.

And thanks to the Internet, ideas are shared faster than ever. So people are making their own short films and playing them on YouTube instead of waiting around for film festivals (which are still going strong). And by no means is this a problem. I’m a little ashamed at myself for not already being on board… but in due time. These people may very well have original ideas that may, in fact, be completely unheard of. And that’s awesome. It’s even better when someone who has a louder voice, or more money, comes along to amplify that original idea. District 9 anyone? The idea of aliens coming to Earth is nothing new. But aliens being shipwrecked and discriminated against? Okay, I don’t know if it’s original, but it’s new to me. But in documentary form? My booty was firmly planted in the seat. Actually, it had been planted long before it was released, but that’s besides the point. An old idea presented in a new or unique way is the point here.

And that’s a method I plan to take. But that’s for the stories I know people sorta know already. Like romantic comedies, for example. There is a formula to it. I don’t want to get into what that is, but if you’ve seen one or two, you’ve seen most of them. Normally, the guy gets the girl despite a bunch of rough patches and wrong turns, whatever or whoever that may be. I do like rom-coms. I have quite a few in my head I’d like to write. I’ll bet a lot of the popular ones were based on real life events, like (500) Days of Summer. Which to me, by the way, also felt like an original story. Or at least told in an original and unique way.

And it’s my personal opinion, that if you are telling a story that is about a true event that happened to you, that may pass as an original story. Not to sound existential, but life is an original story. We may share a lot of the same elements like first loves, tragic losses that lead to dramatic life changes, betrayal of a friend, dark secrets exposed… quick, what movie pops in your mind? What is Death at a Funeral? Probably not, but that movie has a lot of those elements in it.

Anyway, my point is retelling real-life events. Unless I had a biographer, only I would be able to tell my own story. I have an idea of telling a specific event in my father’s life. It has a bit of Tarantino to it, with non-linear storytelling, but it’s a story only my family knows. Telling someone’s whole life story treads a line of original story and biography.

Another idea I have is telling stories about the ancient past. Is it just me, or is history a gold mind for original stories? I’m sitting on story now I can’t wait to map out thanks to countless hours of watching the History Channel. And no, I’m not telling you. Hahah… But knowing history can be a great source for inspiration. Whether you research a documented real life hero or make up your own that could’ve lived in the time of your choosing, that’s up to you. But I don’t think you can ever go wrong sitting around listening to friends and family talk about life and drawing inspiration from them… unless they are a bit senile and it’s really an episode of Monk they thought happened to them. But hey… sounds a bit like how Bubba Ho-tep may have been conceived. Either way, that’s a movie unlike I’ve ever seen or heard.

Lastly, let’s not forget another great source for an attempt at originality: dreams. I thought I may have seen and heard it all… then the best kept secret that ended up being one of the best movies of the summer (possibly the year) came along…

Click to read my review

I only heard a few contend that this movie isn’t as original as it feels. But we can all agree it’s a breath of fresh air. And at the end of the day, I think that’s what a lot of people want… something fresh. Not a remake, reboot, reimagining, sequel, prequel, based on a book/cartoon or a “cover version”. Yet, I would make a case for those, nothing beats a brand new original story… even if it’s not all that original.

fripodding and playing fair: “hey, soul sister” by train

The mother of one of my best friends recommended I check out this song, “Hey, Soul Sister” by Train. At the time, it was a song I thought I had never heard by a group I never heard of. My friend told me other songs they had done, which didn’t help jog my memory whatsoever. So once I got home to look up these songs, I found that this was a song I heard quite frequently on a commercial or two. What it was advertising, I can’t remember… but I remember the uppity, bright, happy feeling it gave me without really paying that much attention to it. Music has interesting affects on my like that.

After watching the video, which I also enjoyed, I set forth to download the song and I found myself hitting repeat for the greater part of an hour… or more. I later reported to my friend to report to her mother that I loved the song. My friend responded that certain doom would rain upon me if I played the song while she was in the car–she didn’t care for it as much as her mother or I did. Her loss.

In any event, whenever she wasn’t around, I cranked the volume up to 11 and drove around town feeling as sunny and bright as this song does. That’s one of the reasons I love this song. And this light, happy feeling seems to translate into the video with all the brightness that’s shown. Sure there are smudges from the charcoal going on… but discussing the video is slightly different and I’ll get into that in a second.

What stood out to me the most about this song are the lyrics. If you haven’t learned by now, I’m attracted to very creative wordplay and imagery. (The other song I said I wasn’t aware of, I later found out I had heard a few times too: “Drops of Jupiter” which also has great lyrics with imagery.) This song dances on the line of being cheesy and cliché, yet to me, personally, it doesn’t bother me because it’s overall positive and puts me in a really good and optimistic mood. Songs of this nature can be hit or miss… so for me, this was a hit.

A brief breakdown of the song as I interpret it is as follows: this guy has met this girl that he has completely and utterly fallen for. Life is 100% better and brighter since meeting her and he is entranced by everything she does. This has given him confidence and maybe even a sense of self worth. Not that he didn’t have it before, but I think we can all agree that the feeling of mutual acceptance is empowering and encouraging to do better knowing you have strong moral support. And she seems to feel the same way too, as he intends to make her feel just as awesome as she has done for him.

The line I love the most is: The way you move ain’t fair ya know and The way you cut a rug / watching you is the only drug I need. Why? Women are magical. And whether they are dancing, walking, or just being… there’s a natural beauty to their movements and actions that they may or may not be aware of. And it’s not fair that women possess this power… but I’m not really complaining about it either. This song points out many of the aspects this guy really enjoys about this girl and watching her move is one of those highlights that I resonate and agree with… among many of the others he sings about. Some girls I know have a similar track mind like me too.

As for the video, I’ve seen animations like this before a few years ago by some artists with similar walls and charcoal/chalk. I wish I could find it but I’d probably run into a bunch of videos just like it versus the one I’ve actually seen. I also recently saw Coldplay’s “Strawberry Swing” video which employs the same animation style but in a very different direction (and nominated for a VMA for Breakthrough video). Also awesome, but I like Train’s song better.

As I was saying, this video really matches the feelings expressed in the song. Plus I’m a sucker for written words, so seeing the lyrics running around everywhere is awesome to me. I have no doubt this video took some time to produce, but its well worth it in my opinion. Furthermore, it has a sweet ending. Awwww.

Question… Why didn’t this get a VMA nod? I have a handful of others I thought stood out… but oh well.

“kick-ass” film review

Quick tiny disclaimer here—I’m not usually one to use swears. This includes what I write and everyday dialogue. And I know to a lot of people, certain words aren’t considered swears while other people consider that they are. But for the sake of artistic integrity, I will call the movie by its given name.

Here we find another comic book/superhero movie that is attempting to break a mold by not being your typical-everyday-comic book/superhero movie. By the time I finished watch it, the movies I felt were most like this movie included: Watchmen, Kill Bill, and Sin City. I’d also include Spider-Man due the fact the main character pretty much compares himself to Spider-Man a couple of times, as well as him following a similar path of being a new hero with new powers and responsibilities. That’s mostly all the similarities for that movie… that and a Mary Jane character.

What the other three movies have is what some would describe as very graphic violence. And for that reason alone, for those parents that care about that sorta thing, I would say to keep your young children at bay until they are old enough to understand that an 11-year-old is murdering bad people… violently. As an adult, possibly a slightly sadistic one, I found some humor in it once the shock value went away.

So yeah, there’s a girl going around shoot, stabbing slicing and all around killing dozens of people. Granted, they are bad people. But unlike most superhero movies, the baddies don’t die such horrible gruesome deaths. And if they do, it’s not really shown on camera. And if it is, it’s not bloody. This is where the Kill Bill reference comes in. If you remember when The Bride goes to attack the Crazy 88, there is blood gushing out everywhere as if it were a cartoon or a Mortal Kombat video game. People complained about the ultra-violence (in both violence), but they fail to understand that the movie wasn’t meant to be taken seriously. I’m not saying violence is cool… but in the tone of the movie, yeah, it actually was.

The bloodshed continues in movies like Sin City, 300 and Watchmen. I’m definitely citing Watchmen because, again, the graphic violence but especially because it’s about costumed vigilantes trying to stop crime. Some were good at it, some weren’t. And some died in the process. I see this as more of a comical approach to the way superheroes are portrayed vs. Watchmen’s deathly serious tone. Plus, no blue naked man. There are many references to sex though. References that young teen boys would understand and may be too embarrassed to talk about with their mom or even knowing that it’s true. In fact, don’t watch it with your mom if you are worried about that kinda stuff.

And I’ve heard critics say that this movie is somewhat tailor-made for boys and men of that age. And it’s true. I mean, it caught my attention. Plus I realized I have a weakness for comic book movies. This movie provided the kind of escapism I crave every so often. It was fun, funny, action-packed and full of bright colors like a real life comic book come to life.

Overall, I liked it. It made my “to buy” list. It was probably worth seeing in theaters… but I missed that boat.

more “power”-ful insights

I’m back once again with a somewhat ongoing debate with the interwebs. I’m also here to give an update on what I’ve more or less been obsessed with for the past week or so. But this is my blog; it’s my own soapbox to declare whatever I would like to talk about instead of going on various message boards, forums and comment boxes to all the YouTube users who have an opinion different than mine. Plus, people are still looking for answers, meanings and interpretations about this whole Power video thing, and I feel I could help out by briefly educating them on what they think is going on. Or for the people who disagree with me, provide meaningful and educated rebuttals.

First of all, according to Mr. West himself, this clip is in fact part of a much larger project. I’m excited about this; however, I hope in order to see it won’t cost me an arm and a leg. I’d buy a DVD if that’s what it is, but I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. Probably more images to decipher? First thing’s first: how about we buy the album first? He seems to be so busy creatively that everyone is eagerly waiting for the remix to “Power” …so in the meantime he threw us the awesome “See Me Now.”

Second order of business of “Power”: there is an alternate and uncensored video clip floating around on YouTube. I actually saw it the other night and it explains reports I read (and cannot find to cite here) about naked women all over the set. Granted, the “real” video aired on MTV has to be censored to a degree, but this version fits in a lot better to the videos I tend to find on Kanye’s artistic blog of pretty things and pretty girls who tend to be pretty naked. I’m only posting a link to the video and not the video itself due to its NSFWisticness. I feel like I’m going against my “for the sake of art” rule, but this is my soapbox, I can post what I want. So there. There are major differences and subtle ones… more women, some of them in different positions, some of them look different altogether. The lady with the wings, were wings are different. You also see more of the portrait, and it’s not in “ruins”. There are no explosions or cool close ups. In fact, it’s shorter. But you’ll see all of this for yourself. My analysis stays the same for the most part. I’m not sure which I like better though. Probably the first version.

Lastly, and I really don’t want to write a novel like I did last week, but I did some further research into what many claim about this “Power” video being influenced by Free Masons, the Illuminati, and a new world order. And I read that someone mentioned tarot cards used in this video, which I know nothing about but may research in the future. I may have mentioned this before, and basically, conspiracy theories are just that: theories. Ideas that haven’t been proven to be true or false. So I don’t see a reason to get all bent out of shape for something that may not even be there. Some people will go to great lengths to make a point and may end up stretching the truth so it reflects what they believe, thus, make it more of a theory and a distorted truth. But those are the people who have actually done the research and might have bent what they learned for their own use. (I’m not saying all theorists do this, I think some of them are real.) Then there are those who grab a nugget of what they heard or saw and run without fully understanding all of what they heard, and this is how high school rumors start, also known as mass hysteria. Remember Y2K? Good times.

Once again, this will be continued. I would really like to write about some other topics even though I’ve enjoyed doing all this research and analysis. I’ve seen a mailbox worth of movies that need reviews, plus I still have to give my three cents about the VMAs. Although, in the end, it’ll still be a popularity contest. All hail Lady Gaga?

fripodding and slinking – “slink (a hymn)” by locksley

The Good Guys

Perhaps you may have seen or heard about a little show called The Good Guys? I hope so. It’s a top rate show in my book. Dare I say it, it may even be considered appointment TV for me. It’s a cop comedy about two Dallas police officers looking to catch a break. Either a break in the case, a break from the boss, or even a break from each other. They typically get served the small cases that wouldn’t stir up much trouble, but the veteran cop has a nose for finding crime when at surface level, you wouldn’t necessarily find it. And you know how it goes when you look for trouble, sometimes it finds you first. This comedic take on the typical cop show is a breath of fresh air for me. Sure it can get down right ridiculous, but sometimes, that’s the kind of escapism we need in our entertainment. No?

It started this summer a couple months ago but I recently got word that it will be moving to Friday nights, which to me sounds bad but I’m hoping for the best. Why? Friday night death slot. Anyway, even thought it has been on Mondays, ratings haven’t been stellar. Which might explain it’s move to Friday. Plus, it started as a summer show, so it looks they’ll continue it in the fall.

But I didn’t come on here to tell you about all of that. Not today anyway. Today I wanted to discuss the show’s theme song. It’s a perfect fit to the mood of the show. Sadly, I can’t get any video of it to show you, but the least I can do is post a full version of the song. It’s also available for free download should you enjoy it as much as I do.

And how much did I enjoy it? Shucks! It’s my default ringtone! I don’t get too many calls, but I’ll be excited whenever I do… as long as whoever calls me doesn’t already have a tone assigned to them.

Anyway, as for the band Locksley, I’m still investigating them. I don’t know a lot about them, but I checked out a few of their other songs and they aren’t too bad. Definitely worth checking out.

But for now, this “Slink” will be a song blasted out of my car as I’m speeding down the road like my favorite cop duo. Because… well… that’s what this song makes me feel like doing. It’s just fun. And so is the show, so check it out on FOX and/or Hulu!

showing love for “love the way you lie”

I was going to hold this until my friPod post… but nah.

As I was doing my in-depth write up of Kanye West’s “Power” video, during my research I kept discovering critics and bloggers comparing “Power” to Eminem’s “Love the Way You Lie.” At first glance, I couldn’t understand why these two videos would be compared to each other… but then I remembered they both premiered the same night on MTV. Not only that, they are two of the biggest hip hop performers riding on a comeback wave right now. And both have some equally powerful music videos to keep that momentum going.

Granted, these are two completely different artists and these two songs are on completely different subjects. I really dig both songs. Both videos, as well as the artists themselves, can be considered controversial. Both songs and videos have something important to say. And if you look back at all their past singles, both of them know how to make good and entertaining music videos. I don’t want to call myself a really big Eminem fan, but I really do like a lot of his music. I love his intensity, his voice and his style. He may need his own friPod post just to talk about him. But with all the ‘Ye vs Em going on, I look at these videos like apples and oranges. They are both delicious fruits, but they taste different. I prefer pineapples anyway.

Still, I felt it’s only proper to give some love to Eminem’s newest video and talk about why I like the song and the video. Sure, I’m a week late, but here I am and here it is.

If you aren’t up to date with pop culture world, our troubled couple is LOST‘s “Charlie”, or Dominic Monaghan and the blue eyed brunette bombshell that apparently drives all the men crazy, Megan Fox. I will admit, I’m not really that crazy about her. She’s got the looks, and it really does work for this video, they both look trashy… but in a good way that works for this. It’s no offense to her, not that she’d care. I’m just saying. Anyway, it’s not hard to figure out what’s going on in this video and what the song is talking about. I think what some people may relate to (or at least friends that I know personally that love this song) is the subject matter of the song, having been in an abuse relationship, physical and/or verbal.

What seems to amp this song up to a higher level of reality is not only is Eminem reflecting on his past, but his co-star Rhianna is channeling her scars too. I’m not sure you could find better raw emotion like that from a signer unless they lived it. Well, maybe from Tina Turner. But I’m not going to go down a list of names of victims. It’s a very touchy subject and I know too many people who have gone through similar if not worse conditions.

Fire is always alluring and mesmerizing. Or maybe that’s the ex-pyromaniac in me talking. But this video seems to smolder before the literal flames are released. If only it started raining, maybe these two could calm down. Rihanna could lend an umbrella, but Eminem would still be angry in the rain. Either way, fire is a strong element in the song as well as to the video, and it is easily the 5th star of this hot video.

So as good as this song is, it’s not one that I would personally keep on repeat. It’s similar to watching the Oscar movie Crash. Awesomely powerful and moving, but can be emotionally draining. And for the record, I don’t mind songs and movies that are like that… they just have their time and their place.

Overall, another great piece of work (song and video) from Mr. Mathers. Perhaps we will see him battle Mr. West in the 2011 for best video. Personally, I’d like to see them do a song together besides the “Forever” collabo with Drake and Lil’ Wayne (nominated this year). But that’s just me.

revisiting kanye west’s “power” interpretation

I’ve decided to take another look at Kanye West’s “Power” musical portrait and expand on my “snap judgement” thoughts I posted last friDay. For the most part, I’m still sticking to those original thoughts and feelings I’ve had, but I was curious what the rest of the interwebs had been saying about him and/or the video and how they may have interpreted it’s meaning.

One thing that bothers me, and this is slightly off-topic, but those comments that were against this video, calling it “evil” or “satanic” or invoking the Illuminati, I couldn’t take too seriously due to spelling and grammar issues, among other things. I mean, they were barely making a point as it was, but still… if you want to tell me to “read a book” or “educate myself”, please be sure you do the same too while forming complete thoughts. Just saying.

Anyway, with education and research, you will come to find that not everything that looks weird or demonic is as evil as you think. I really can’t speak for Kanye or anyone else for that matter, but I’m all for visually stimulating content that has something to say, whether it’s “good” or “evil” or just a point of view which could literally mean anything. What I’m talking about here is the women with the horns on their heads. Immediately, people are quick to flock to devil worshiping. On the contrary, this video invokes a lot of Ancient Egyptian themes, and some of the gods and goddesses had long goat-like horns (and staffs). One such Egyptian goddess goes by the name of Hathor, who is the goddess of the sky, love, music and motherhood… among other things. I read an interpretation that compared these Hathor-like women to Kanye’s mother whom probably represented these things in Kanye’s life. I also read someone considered the woman with the wings to also be a representation of his mother, being an angelic figure. Whatever or whoever she is supposed to represent, it’s one of my favorite visuals in this video, which is just so aesthetically pleasing (mirror images, colors, lights, darks, slow motion, etc.).

By no means am I an expert on all of this. The more I read into ancient symbols and what they symbolize, the more I get my own idea of what they could possibly mean to the artists creating this portrait. Artists, as is more than one. This is a collaboration of Kanye West and Marco Brambilla. I’m still researching Brambilla, but from the interviews, it sounds like he may have been the driving force behind how and what visuals are played out, interpreting West’s lyrics to an exaggerated sense of the concept of power.

And let’s not forget, that’s what’s being portrayed in this portrait: power. Or, what does it look like if one man has too much power? Sexy women with staffs, dancing and sitting around eating grapes? Sure. Walking down a pillar hallway that leads somewhere into the sky? Why not? More sexy women hanging upside-down with upward flowing water? Of course!

But with great power, comes great responsibility. Oops, wrong quote. Or is it?

My favorite nugget I found most interesting was the sword above Kanye’s head. This is the Sword of Damocles. As much as I love Greek stories and mythologies, I’m surprised I’ve never heard of it until recently. Rather than tell you in my own words and screw it up, I suggest reading this to get a sense of why that sword is dangling above Kanye’s head:

The Damocles of the anecdote was an obsequious courtier in the court of Dionysius II of Syracuse, a fourth century BC tyrant of Syracuse. Damocles exclaimed that, as a great man of power and authority, Dionysius was truly fortunate. Dionysius offered to switch places with him for a day, so that Damocles could taste first hand that fortune. In the evening a banquet was held where Damocles very much enjoyed being waited upon like a king. Only at the end of the meal did he look up and notice a sharpened sword hanging directly above his head by a single horse-hair. Immediately, he lost all taste for the fine foods and beautiful companions and asked leave of the tyrant, saying he no longer wanted to be so fortunate. Dionysius had successfully conveyed a sense of the constant fear in which the great man lives. – Wikipedia.org

When I first saw the video, I had no idea why it was there or what it meant. But now, it makes so much more sense.

Horus is on the right.

But back to Egyptian mythology, because I don’t want people to think I’m leaving out Kanye’s new bling: that is Horus. He is the god of the sky, kings and protection. It is also said that Hathor is Horus’s mother. So there’s that. But what does Horus have to do with Kanye? Or at least what does it mean in this portrait? Well, it’s obvious King Kanye would want to invoke the god of the kind for protection from all attacks… we’ve seen the Sword of Damocles, and we see, to my count, three potential assassins. To be honest, I have no clue why he chose Horus, but that’s what I came up with. It may require more research or someone just asking him what it all means.

And what about those two (or three) dudes with the swords. (The third dude is actually the first “assailant” with the dagger who is upside down.) What these people represent to me is equivalent to the tragic play Julius Caesar. I don’t even have to take it that far, but it’s clear that anyone who is standing in a position of power is or can be a target to be taken down.

Lastly, let’s not forget this is a work of art, and a moving painting. I know when I was young, even today, I’m intrigued by those classic Renaissance paintings hundreds of years ago that depicted a single scene with so much going on, so much imagery, and didn’t have to move. Surely those are still up for interpretation, and I bet you people are depicting conspiracy theories behind those too. Actually, I know they are. Thanks a lot The da Vinci Code.

If anything, hopefully instead of scaring people or making them jump to easy scapegoats and radical confusions as Illuminati affiliated or selling one’s soul to the devil (which I personally believe is impossible for reason I choose not discuss right now), people will do what the artist might want them to do and investigate what’s really being said. Start educating yourself and do a little research. Can’t we be a little more cultured? And for the sake of being unique, can’t we have some thought provoking entertainment? So when I mean education and research, I mean looking around besides Wikipedia, although that is my first stop to half of what I research. Dare I suggest to crack open an actual book?

Regarding the Illuminati–is Kanye in cahoots with them? I don’t know. My gut is telling me no. Conspiracy theories are just that: theories. Meaning, they haven’t been proven. And some of them may never be because quite possibly, there is nothing to prove. People will believe what they want so there’s no point in the artist(s) trying to tell them otherwise. I think we covered this with Jay-Z’s visually stimulating “On To The Next One.” I’m still doing research on what the Illuminati is all about, but I’m not convinced they are part of “Power” however I wouldn’t put it past Kanye or Marco to incorporate it in this video since it depicts a source of power. Both of these artists are very cultured individuals (Kanye’s blog is truth to this), so why not incorporate these past images in your present work? The theorists say the triangle/pyramid at the end is an Illuminati image, as well as a somewhat hidden eye in the clouds. These are the same things you see on your money and the Free Masons and blah blah blah. It’s not that I doubt their existence, it’s just that I don’t care.

And let’s be honest, if this were some typical video showing off classy cars, would we even be talking about it as much as we are? You personally may not be talking about it, but it’s being talk about. Trust me. (A lot of the traffic that I get comes from my analysis of Jay-Z’s video.) And if I’m wrong and these artists are really part of a secret conspiracy, then I’m wrong. But I am not defending them, I’m defending art and something I find original, unique and thought-provoking. Plus it’s a good song and I can’t wait for the album!

To be such a short video, it gets a lot of people talking… including myself and I still have more thoughts about it. But that’s the point of a good piece of art, right?

2010 emmy picks – comedy

emmys.com

I snatched the following list from Entertainment Weekly because I wasn’t going to type out every single name and show when copy/paste works so much better. Anyway, since I can’t guess the Emmys as well as I can the Oscars, I’m just going to pick who I’d like to win, my pick will be bold. I may give a few comments to those I think may win… or just comments in general. However, there are a few categories I know nothing about due to shows I don’t watch. Lastly, since there are 20 categories, I’m splitting these posts. Thank me later.

*And just like any award show, there are what we call “snubs” meaning, shows or actors we, the audience, felts have been left out. I’ll include any that I personally felt have been overlooked or left out for at least a nomination.

To also save some time, I have some acronyms I’ll use
I hear good things and hope to check out someday – HGT
Fond farewell, schedule last season, nice goodbye gift – FF

COMEDY
OUTSTANDING COMEDY
Glee HGT
Modern Family Every episode has been gold
Curb Your Enthusiasm I like this show, haven’t seen this past season though
Nurse JackieHGT
30 Rock This is my 2nd choice, but I’d feel hurt if it bested Modern Family
The Office I still like this show as well

OUTSTANDING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY
Lea Michele (Glee)
Tina Fey (30 Rock) I will follow you to the ends of the Earth
Toni Collette (The United States of Tara) HGT, I’ve actually seen one episode. But I love the idea and she does an excellent job playing all of her personalities.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus (The New Adventures of Old Christine) Take that CBS for cancelling the show! …That is, if she won. And I wouldn’t be mad if she did.
Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie) HGT, she was good on 30 Rock
Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation) Maybe not this year, but she’s cool with me.

OUTSTANDING ACTOR IN A COMEDY
Larry David (Curb Your Enthusiasm)
Alec Baldwin (30 Rock)
Matthew Morrison (Glee) I’ll put it this way, he’s the only one I’m not familiar with. So with that, I’m having a hard time choosing who’d I want to win.
Steve Carell (The Office)
Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory)
Tony Shalhoub (Monk) FF
*Joel McHale (Community)

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A COMEDY
Chris Colfer (Glee)
Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother)NPH would be, I guess my 4th pick. Let’s face it, he’s awesome. But he’s running against Modern Family
Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family) Don’t make me choose.
Jon Cryer (Two and A Half Men)
Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family)You can’t make me choose.
Ty Burrell (Modern Family) I refuse to choose.
*Ed O’Neil (Modern Family) – Granted, if he had been nominated too, I still wouldn’t choose.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY
Jane Lynch (Glee)Even though I don’t watch the show, she’s brilliant in anything she’s in.
Kristen Wiig (Saturday Night Live) – Probably SNL’s MVP. Deserved.
Jane Krakowski (30 Rock) Somewhat of a scene stealer.
Julie Bowen (Modern Family) I think she would be my 2nd place, but I love this show I want them all to win.
Sofia Vergara (Modern Family) There are several reasons I want her to win. Her accent for starters, she uses it for comedy without even trying. And her looks also play heavily on comedy too. I’ve been a fan of her since Big Trouble. Yeah, it’s like that.
Holland Taylor (Two and A Half Men)

OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES
Mike O’Malley (Glee)
Neil Patrick Harris (Glee) – I want to give it to him, but again, I haven’t seen it. He’s still awesome though.
Fred Willard (Modern Family) – Awesome in everything he does, we can probably expect him to return for more interacting with the family.
Eli Wallach (Nurse Jackie)
Jon Hamm (30 Rock) – Idiot. (I wouldn’t be mad if he won.)
Will Arnett (30 Rock) – Genius. (I wouldn’t be mad if he won.)

OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES
Christine Baranski (The Big Bang Theory)
Kathryn Joosten (Desperate Housewives)
Kristin Chenoweth (Glee)
Tina Fey (Saturday Night Live) – I’m going to pretend she is nominated for the last sketch she did with Betty White, who can’t do any wrong… so…
Betty White (Saturday Night Live) – Because it’s Betty White.
Elaine Stritch (30 Rock)
Jane Lynch (Two and a Half Men)

REALITY
OUTSTANDING REALITY SHOW HOST
Ryan Seacrest (American Idol)
Phil Keoghan (The Amazing Race)
Tom Bergeron (Dancing with the Stars)

Project Runway
Top Chef
The Amazing Race
Dancing with the Stars
American Idol

OUTSTANDING REALITY PROGRAM
Antiques Roadshow
Dirty Jobs
Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution
Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D List
Mythbusters – I’m not a big fan of reality TV, although these shows are the “good” kind. However, this is the only one I’d regularly tune into given a choice.
Undercover Boss

VARIETY, MUSIC, OR COMEDY
OUTSTANDING VARIETY, MUSIC, OR COMEDY SERIES
The Colbert Report I like the show
The Daily Show With Jon Stewart
I like this show too
Real Time With Bill Maher
I used to watch this show when I had HBO
Saturday Night Live
As we all know, they’ve been hit or miss.
The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien
Take that NBC for cancelling the show! I mean, what a slap in the face to all those responsible for his show ending if he won. And an insult to Leno, I mean, how many months was Conan on? CoCo FTW!

The Emmys air August 29th, 8PM on NBC.

fripod exclusive: “power” music video by kanye west

In case you haven’t heard since sometime in May, Mr. West is back. Once I heard that the first single was leaked, I was hesitant to take a listen. Why? Lately I’ve been enjoying buying my albums without hearing a single single, and then picking my favorite song(s) without any bias.

Well I couldn’t resist for this song. I heard it was like a superhero anthem. I agree. I heard he was back on his game. I agree with that too. Now all we need is an awesome video to go with it. I put the thought on the back burner for a little while until recently when I read that the video would be airing August 5th on MTV! What the stank? A music video on MTV? And an old fashioned premiere at that? But hey, this is Kanye West we’re talking about. Love him or hate him, he’s a power player.

And power is what he raps about in this song, if the title didn’t already give it away. But I’m not really here to chat about the song… more about the video. I tuned in at 11pm to catch it. I wish I continued reading an article about it so I knew what I was in for. To sum up the article, the video is barely your standard music video only clocking in at 1 minute and 43 seconds.

The video is also described as a living painting. Like those historical Renaissance epic paintings you see in museums and church ceilings, full of imagery that you may or may not understand but all the while is still alluring because there is just so much to look at. Well, that’s what this is. Rather than write 1000 words, why not let the video speak for itself?

I will admit, at first I was a little upset because I didn’t expect it to be so short. I was really feeling it though. I dig the arts, if you haven’t realized. I still may not fully understand it, but I like the imagery and I’m interested in analyzing it later and getting other interpretations. I actually like a lot if not most of his videos. He’s got an eye for art, creativity and originality. Don’t believe me, check his website. Be careful, there are lots of naked girls and media that can eat away at your computer if it runs slow like mine. And for the record, I don’t feel this is “evil” or “satanic” or has anything to do with the Illuminati. Everything isn’t a big conspiracy to rule the world. If anything, that’s sorta what he’s talking about: no man should have all this power.

Quick side note, Eminem also premiered a new music video last night on MTV too. Also a welcomed comeback and a power player.

Continued thoughts, do you think this video (and Eminem’s newest) will be nominated for the 2011 MTV VMA’s?
