overdue (mental) health checkup

I think we all can agree it’s been a rough year and even rougher last couple months. At least for me, it has, as I’ve found myself more socially conscious and aware of what’s happening in our society and the awful foreshadowing of things hopefully not to come.

One new sensation I had the displeasure of experiencing this year, a few times now, is anxiety. I didn’t know what it was during my ordeal getting pulled over earlier this summer, or even when I was recounting the events while the worst had been happening elsewhere. But I was finally able to recognize it and label it during this most recent election.

I did find solace in knowing that I wasn’t alone feeling anxious, afraid and even angry about a Trump presidency. And it’s still frustrating that some people fail to understand why it makes me and a million others feel that way. But that particular issue isn’t what I want to talk about right now. But it is related. Read more ›

road trip

file-sep-02-7-59-09-pm

I love road trips. There’s nothing quite like venturing out on the open road to some destination across the country, listening to good tunes, taking in the sights and view with new experiences and memories waiting.

I’d been on several road trips, especially when I was younger with my family and even a few occasions with church groups. Most of this trips I traveled with at least one other person, and even if I couldn’t, I still went. Not too far, though.

My most recent trip, I wanted to go visit a friend halfway across the country. I previously flew out there (coincidentally my first time flying) but considering I hadn’t taken a long drive in a long time, I was up for the challenge. My drive would have lasted about 20 hours nonstop, which I knew was doable as I had taken a similar solo trek 4 years prior.

However, a major difference between 2012 and 2016 was the rise or at least my awareness of unarmed Black people being killed seemingly just for being Black. In fact, the murder of Trayvon Martin was on the news the entire weekend. Flash forward to July 5th and 6th, 2016 when Alton Sterling and Philando Castile were both killed on camera by cops. And here I was, getting ready to drive across the country the following week. Read more ›

another hashtag

Another brother is done in by a blue brother’s gun
Just days after “we” celebrate our alleged freedom.
It’s for the privileged, not a right, No matter how it’s spun.
And Even if I comply, why do I still have to die?
Somehow murder you justified, failed to protect me from.
Ignored grievances implied, continue the struggle my orphaned son.
Hard enough to maintain when you are the real killer.
They know me as a saint but y’all paint me as a sinner.
They mourn me in pain and your acquittals keep gettin quicker.
Another hashtag that was slain while y’all continue eatin dinner.
When can life no longer be pernicious?
When can we be safe to just be us?
It’s one thing to be cuffed but film snuff?
Is there even such a thing as justice?
When will enough finally be enough?

I’m so tired… but somehow, please don’t give up.

going forward…

IMG_20160425_212124I’m on the cusp of change. Changing from what to what? That’s the question. Those who have kept up with my sporadic blogging have known my career path has been in flux since I had been laid off from the Office some five years ago. This blog was actually born while I was still fresh at that job. But there’s no time to reminisce. Not right now. A little naval gazing? Sure.

These days, I am on the verge of something newer. Something greater. And I’m terrified.

Have you ever had an idea that you just knew was going to work, and it got you super excited that you were ready to explode? Then you told all your friends and loved ones and they told you it was a great idea and it only made you happier and even more excited? But then it hit you… that it’s possible that this idea, should you execute it, will change your life.  Read more ›

an ode to an artist

870px-prince_logo-svg2016 has felt like a rough year when it comes to the mortality of our beloved celebrity entertainers. We lost some larger than life stars like David Bowie, Alan Rickman, Vanity, Victoria Wood, and just recently former wrestler Chyna. And on that same day we lost her, we lost another legendary icon. I spent most of that night both mourning and celebrating a man I had never met, but had grown up with all my life. And now, after his death, we reminisce about Prince the artist, as we learn more about Prince Rogers Nelson the man.

One thing that is certain: he is much more than just a musician. Just labeling him as an entertainer is an understatement beyond measure, but that’s what most of the world know him to be, albeit an extraordinary one. But as a man, he had a passion for life and the living, and wanted to make the very best of that life for those around him, based on what those close to him have said. Daily, he spent his life as a living embodiment of art, breathing music day and night while also doing whatever humanly possible within his power to make the world a better place. Most saw this through his performance, few witnessed it through his philanthropy. In Prince, we not only lost an artist, but a true human being that cared, and loved to love people. The world undoubtedly suffered a loss. Read more ›

batman v superman: dawn of expectation

batman-v-superman-trailer-screengrab-36I feel like I’ve reviewed Batman v Superman a dozen times or so in this past weekend as many people have asked my opinion on this very polarizing movie. I tried my best to stay away from reviews before I watched the movie so I could go into the experience with a somewhat open mind, free to form my own judgments without prejudiced praise or slander from professionals and peers.

I put my digital recorder to use and recorded my snap judgment, driving home from the theater after my first viewing.

Yes, in the span of two days I had seen the film twice. Is it worth seeing twice? No. But it’s a little better the second time.
Worth seeing in 3D and/or IMAX? Not really. You won’t be disappointed, but it’s not like Star Wars or Pacific Rim where you’d want the largest screen to get the most out of that movie.
Should you still see the movie if you haven’t already despite the bad press? Yes.
Is it as bad as everyone says it is? No.
Do I need to see Man of Steel before seeing BvS? No, but it helps.
Should I bring all the kids? You can… you just might want to take them to get ice cream or do something happy afterwards. Read more ›

10 cloverfield lane (spoiler-free review)

mv5bmjezmjczotixmv5bml5banbnxkftztgwotuwmji3nze-_v1_ux182_cr00182268_al_What does Beyoncé and JJ Abrams have in common? The ability to fully produce a project unbeknownst to the general public and then suddenly drop said secret surprise project to mass acclaim. Twice. Kinda.

The other day I had been wondering who else in the entertainment industry could be capable of pulling a “Beyoncé” other than Beyoncé herself, and lo and behold, I find Mr. Abrams pulling a Bad Robot surprise out of his hat. First, let me start off by saying that just like Cloverfield, Abrams is only a producer on this film. But when it comes to a Bad Robot feature, “only a producer” is an understatement.

10 Cloverfield Lane might be one of my favorite films so far of 2016. And that’s saying a lot. Yes, I’m a bit of “stan” when it comes to anything JJ Abrams has his hands on, but for good reason. He is a master storyteller and sets up intrigue and mystery that might make Hitchcock pause. I also found this film to be a great study for those looking to get into filmmaking and storytelling in general. I’ll explain more, while avoiding spoilers. Read more ›
