getting down to the business of vacation

I won’t lie. I’m not even going to try to pretend I’ve been super busy these past few days. I am on vacation. It’s not what I’d consider a “real vacation” like the one I planned a few months ago, but I’m not at work and I’m getting paid for the time off… so that’s a decent definition of a vacation.

Besides, it’s not like I haven’t been doing anything.

Monday I was at the Basketball Hall of Fame. I went with the Kitten and her siblings to pass the Memorial Day. I found out that back in the day, the players used to wear knee pads. Also, their jerseys looked more like sweaters without sleeves. And some of these jerseys were actually onesies (I’m not sure how it would be spelled, but it’s the one piece undershirt normally worn by babies). It was definitely interesting. I learned that I could get a rebound ball at 8’10”. And later I lost to a young punk in a game of Horse that I didn’t even want to play. I even broke a sweat! I didn’t go there for that! Later, we all went to the park and kinda forgot that Memorial Day is also National Get Out The Grill and Cook Some Food Day. But we managed to find a spot on the grass and even found some ducks that weren’t too full to eat our moldy bread.

Tuesday I went into the office. My job had set up a mandatory department meeting that required everyone to come into the office (instead of calling up on the phone). They tried to entice us with food before, but that wasn’t enough. So they put the hammer down and demanded our presence. I hadn’t been to the office since… hmm… last year? I can’t say… but it’s been a long time. So long, in fact, that one of my co-workers that I got hired with thought I had been fired. Actually, he thought 75% of the people who currently work at home had been fired. In my opinion, he’s not quite the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I’m not prepared to be his sharpening stone.

It was nice to see all these people together. Unfortunately, I hadn’t really known many of them long enough and I still felt like a new kid on the block. Plus, all my other friends either moved to another department or no longer work there. I spoke to those I knew (and a few of those are fellow Indoobians), and even talked to a few I never talked to before. This was due to the video game room they set up. Oh yeah, they added some perks besides catered food, like a video game room, card games, and a story board of some kind where you add one line at a time to an ongoing story. I never made it to that story area, shame on me and my writer skills. I was too busy playing Mario Kart and eventually some Wii Sports like golf and tennis.

And there was actually a meeting too, which was why we were there in the first place. That was set up differently too. Not one person spoke much more than five minutes until they turned the meeting into a Family Feud game show. Seriously. After the meeting, we took a group photo that I know I wasn’t in (the photographer show much effort to get us all in the shot). Then after the games and raffle prizes, we all got a good bag, stocked up on desserts, and went home. I was already mentally turned off from work, so when I returned home, I went back to bed before being rudely interrupted by a very dirty text message. (If curiosity is getting the best of you, ask me what it was.)

Later, the macaroni & cheese torch was passed to me and I made my special brand of a dish most people in my family know how to make very well. And now, so do I. It was so cheesy and delicious.

Wednesday Kitten and I roamed the mall for a much longer period of time than we normally do. You see, we aren’t rolling in dough, so we can’t afford to just do or go anywhere. So we window shopped for a couple hours in stores that we normally spend about 10-15 minutes in. And it was fun! After that, we went to my favorite diner in Middletown before realizing we could’ve made the same exact sandwiches we ordered at home for free. Then, we counted and rolled coins. That’s right; on our days of vacation we poor folk wrapped quarters, nickels and dimes. We didn’t have any penny papers, so those are stacked in the middle of her floor.

‘Twas also our last Spanish class. Kitten couldn’t make it due to a karate test (she chose the violence over langauge… I jest). There’s no final exam or anything like that. This was only just to better ourselves and further our educations and possibly even our future employments. Like I may have mentioned, I personally felt bad for flunking out in high school (Spanish class only) and I wanted to relearn the beautiful language without having to worry about grades. Now if I did take it in college, I’d have a much better understanding. I just need to watch more Telemundo and then I can talk to those sexy latinas in both languages. Anyway, kudos to an awesome Spanish teacher that was ten times better than the teachers I had in high school.

But the best part of my week is yet to come… Hopefully pictures will be involved and maybe even posted. But I’ve made empty promises before, so believe it when you see it. Sorry.

fripodding and purpling: lotusflow3r – prince

I’ve been friPodding the Purple One for almost two weeks now. But it’s necessary since his latest album is actually a double (or triple) album. (Triple because of a new artistling he’s taking care of.) And wouldn’t you know it, my DVD/CD drive has been dead for the past few months, so anytime I had acquired music, I either bought it directly from iTunes or Amazon MP3, or somehow had it transferred to my computer one way or another… which is time consuming and a bit annoying for someone like me.

All of that doesn’t matter now, I have a nice new external drive that does everything that I need it to do. Woot!

So onto what today’s iPick is: I decided to talk about the first album by the name of LOtUSFLOW3R(this is how iSaac reads it, so that’s how I’m spelling it).

I’m not sure where to begin. I started with track 1, which is an intro more or less. This is one of those albums that I believe is built to be listened to beginning to end without stopping. You know, when songs fade into either other or its not exactly easy to distinguish when one song ends and the next begins. This is bittersweet. Especially if I get used to listening to an album beginning to end. But sometimes I only like certain songs, and if they are together, I want to hear them together which means no shuffle or else I am no happy! But that’s my own problem.

Since we are only dealing with this one album, I need to talk about my favorite songs. The first of which almost and maybe still might get it’s own post. It’s the first song that really caught my attention and started getting heavy rotation (both on the CD itself and now when iSaac plays it). This song is called “4Ever” and it’s a great example of the musical genius that is Prince. Why do I say that? It’s just a really beautifully written and composed song! From the instruments involved to the lyrics. I had to go look them up because I wasn’t sure on one line, and then I got stuck when I found out what he was saying: A thousand tomorrows is better than one day… which is found in the latter part of the song… but the song is about the singer wanting forever to love this girl. Yeah, I think it needs its own post so I can post the actual lyrics. Take a listen. (Take note, the lyrics on that link in the video aren’t complete… so just listen, don’t read.)

Some more songs to take note of that I liked are “Crimson and Clover”, “Feel Better, Feel Good, Feel Wonderful”, and “77 Beverly Park” which is just a beautiful instrumental. There’s so much to this album that the more I listen to it, the more I find. It’s got romance, political, inspirational… and a little weirdness. Preferably the last song on the album. I’m not sure what it’s about. Honestly, I don’t know what half of these songs may be reallyabout. And I’m not sure if Prince would be the type of person to give a backstory on a song if there is even a backstory to give. But even if there isn’t one, the song still has a brand of awesomeness that can’t be denied.

i had a dream, indoob!

I had a dream last night, or maybe a couple non-related dreams all within the one night session… but a dream nonetheless.

In this dream, someone came up to me and told me that my blog and all of it’s indoobiness doesn’t stand for what it used to when I started it. I don’t mean “stand for” as in acronymically (Interesting Non-sequiturs by a Dangerously Optimistically Obsessed Boy), but the meaning behind it… with it relating to “the workforce” part of it. And perhaps that may be partially true. Besides, I can’t recall who this person was in my dream who told me this. Nor do I remember anything really specific: where I was, what I was doing, etc. I just remember what was said. And for the record, “indoob” is what happens when a compact car named “indeed” crashes into a semi-truck called “indubitably.” I’m a wordsmith, or did you already know?

The other part of my dream had to do with The Mart’s new roof being completed. Why I was dreaming about this? I couldn’t tell you. Yes, my local Mart is being remodeled, but I’m not concerned with the roof whatsoever.

So what does all this mean? I’ll tell you what… I need to hurry up and by a dream book, for one thing.

But I suppose just to remind myself who/what/why I’m writing this blog. And as far as I can tell, I’m on track to what it’s purpose is. “What is it’s purpose?” one may ask. Simply, just for entertaining enlightenment. Or maybe just for entertainment. Just some musings to help get through the day, as I do the same. Surely, later in my life, and the Indoob’s life, it might become a bigger force. I mean, there’s some potential since I own indoob.com. I now have a HQ that I can build off of. And will I! I got a new toy today that will be in a post all it’s own very soon after I learn how to use this new gadget. And yeah, that’s exactly what it is: a gadget.

We’ll discuss that later. In the meantime, I must attend to some housely duties: cleaning, groceries (restocked on the eggs of course), and I’m back playing chef again with some new menu items. Shrimp alfredo, anyone?

fripodding and reciting: “icarus airlines” – taylor mali

Technically, this post I had planned to write last week. And I also planned to be all poetic about it, because if you are familiar with this artist’s name, you will know he is one of the great poets of the day. His name is Taylor Mali (pronounced like “Molly”) and I first heard him on Def Poetry Jam some years ago. Awesome performer of the spoken word genre. And I’ve been a fan ever since.

Unfortunately, as I tend to do, my interests shift from time to time and I moved into the film making world and put poetry to the side. Not that I ever stopped, I just didn’t pursue it as much as I once did, you know? So that means I stopped listening and reading some of my favorite poets like Mali and Billy Collins whom I mentioned earlier this week.

I was planning on writing a tribute poem about Taylor Mali, helping to revive my poetic juices that I’ve felt have been dormant for a bit longer than I would’ve liked. This explains the poems I posted this past week (even the poems I didn’t post). But I had lifted my “stop buying music so I can save money” ban just so I could purchase Mali’s spoken word audiobook on iTunes.

Icarus Airlinesis a collection of some of his recent poems. According to iTunes, it was available for download early this year, but apparently it was released a few years ago. Regardless, the poems are still relevant. And although I first knew him to be a comedic poet, he definitely has a serious side. A side that can move you like an 18-wheeler. What I didn’t know about him, he explain through his work. About his late first wife, and probably some things about his current wife. Poems about family and social events. And even a poem about Pluto. And of course, poetry about teaching. This is the dude responsible for the poem What Teachers Make.

I highly recommend this guy and this album to anyone with in an interest in poetry, especially performance poetry. Just a disclaimer here, there is some explicit language, so there’s a warning for those with virgin ears. If you’d like to know more about him, check out his website.

“anesthesia” a poem

If it’s one thing I miss–
often longed for and desired–
it’s the sense of touch
last felt when last time expired.

My arms kept her safe, comforted
at a time when we were significant others.
The sense of touch comforted us–
she was happy, as was I when I was with her.

So often neglected, I wish I felt more,
not mentally, or emotionally,
but that sense of touch,
I miss feeling that feeling physically.

And it is that feeling that drives me
further from into the storm,
rushing to the sense of touch,
naked skin, soft and warm.

I don’t like this anesthesia.
I swear I was forced to succumb.
The sense of touch is missing
and I loathe this feeling of numb

I’m grateful for smells, sights and sounds
and I enjoy tastes since date of birth.
But when will the sense of touch
return to all that I remember it being worth?

It’s been so long since I last felt
that I fear I feel I would recoil in fear.
That connection, the sense of touch,
would need to be gentle, sweet, sincere.

I’m grateful for close companions
sharing laughs and secrets untold.
But it’s not quite like the sense of touch,
having someone close enough to hold.

There’s a clear line between love and lust
and I don’t have a problem with either.
Love can enhance the sense of touch,
but this time around I have neither.

“cubicle assumptions from mr. mondayn” a (working) poem

I can only assume
outside the birds are stalking their food,
squirrels are playing tag, flirting perhaps,
and millions of creepy crawlies
are doing something obscene in and around my yard.

I can only assume
the roofers roofing my neighbor’s roof
are holding back from hammering any louder,
the man from the water department
doesn’t mind holding up non-existent traffic
as he maintains all angles of the fire hydrant,
and the handful of husbands and house men
that decide to cut their lawns at the same
are admiring Spring’s first grassy fruits.

I can only assume
the majority of the neighborhood children
are busy at school, working on assignments
while at least half of their absent friends
are absent for legitimate reasons,
their parents are also hard at work
or possibly hardly working
possibly because they received a call
from the school about their absent child,
and the retired, unemployed,
sickly or vacationed,
reminiscing when they
used to be that absent child
or used to receive that call from the school.

I can only assume
because unlike Mr. Collins,
I do not have a window to see outside.
I’m boxed in my little office nook,
nestled under and around the stairs,
closed in by Japanese wall panels
decorated with bamboo silhouettes.
The light from the stained glass in front of me
paints my walls red, yellow and green,
while the window at the top of the stairs
only tells me if the sun is shining.
But I can still hear
the school buses and garbage trucks,
kids home from school with unfinished homework
claiming that they “did it on the bus,”
the endless constant bird-chatter or chirping,
and any other ambient noise
that isn’t masked by my radio.
That is, until I open my front door
to watch the sunset and pretend to regret
on the work I should have done today,
but have to make up tomorrow.

So let me know what you think… I can take criticism.

cooking up indoobness

Go ahead and ask me…

Where the stank have I been?

What’s the deal with the missing friPod post?

Am I actually cooking anything?

What am I doing?

What did I get my mom for Mom’s Day?

Simmer down, Indoobians, I’d be happy to tell you all that and more. I could have asked myself more assumed questions, but I told myself to hold off on all the questions for now. I shall answer them as they arise.

Truth be told, I didn’t really go anywhere. I’ve mostly been in my room watching a really cool chef by the name of Todd Mohr. His series is called “Cooking Coarse” with the pun intended. He doesn’t teach recipes, but instead, the methods behind them so you can create your own magic in the kitchen. It was so inspiring that I created a saute BBQ pork meal, that took two days to make. (Two days prior to the cooking, I was preparing and marinating the meat. Food was already prepared for the following day, so that meant extra marinade time, and extra time for deliciousness to occur, woot!) I’ve never cooked anything using the saute method before, so it was somewhat a big deal for me. (I know my way around the kitchen pretty well, I’ve been able to throw down for almost 10 years now. Plus it’s a much cheaper hobby than rebuilding computers. Why else do you think I have a breakfast face mascot? It’s my favorite meal! And this might be my next favorite thing to make!) I also had a goal to get my BBQ pork to taste somewhat like this popular buffet that I frequent. Did I hit my mark? I aimed for the moon and hit the stars. At the time this is published, I’m the only one who has eaten any of it, but I’m sure it’s a success. It was to me, and that’s something I can add to my menu. What’s the recipe? That’s for another post, sorry. And I didn’t really follow a recipe, just a cooking method. 😉

Meanwhile, I’ve been cooking up some poetry. I’m a month late for national poetry month, but inspiration kicks in when it wants to. And lately, I’ve been receptive to it as well as random events in my life. As the week goes on, I will post the few poems I have either completed or worked on. Completed works will be posted on my Behance page. It’s what I use it for. The first poem you can probably look forward to (in it’s unedited form) has a working title called Cubicle Assumptions From Mr. Mondayn. This poem was inspired by poetry (and a specific poem called Monday) by the great Billy Collins. One of the next poems is about Mother’s Day. I started writing it on Mother’s Day about Mother’s Day being more than just some specific Sunday in May. And that’s almost an exact line. I have one or two verses left, I haven’t decided yet, but I will post what I have. I wanted to experiment a bit more telling stories with poetry. My next poem I titled Anesthesia. Once I came up with that title, it was pretty difficult to think of something more attention grabbing than it’s contenders I had considered. I rather not say what the poem is about, and let you read it for yourself. The working title was Sense of Touch or just Touch.

I’ll also be working on this week’s friPod post which would’ve been last week’s friPod post. What happened with that? Simple answer: I was lazy. Well, I was also busy most of that day and Thursday (when I usually write them… crap, the secret is out). But what I had in mind I will be writing for this friDay’s post, and I shall not say, but it is related to poetry.

So what am I doing? That’s what Twitter is for.

What did I get my mom for Mom’s Day? A set of fresh cotton scented candles. And I made some cornbread while helping my dad cook more deliciousness. It’s how we roll. Yes, yes, y’all!

“x-men origins: wolverine” review

There are so many puns that have been used to describe the effects Wolverine has done to the first weekend of box office sales. Slashed, clawed, diced, etc. Sure, the sales weren’t as great as the last X-Men movie (X-Men: The Last Stand), but I definitely would say that this movie was a better movie experience. Besides, what do I care about box office sales? I don’t get a percentage.

But I do care about how I spend my hard earned dollars. If I were in the upper crust of society, I’d probably go to my local cinema to watch any and every movie that was released. Considering if I were an upper crustonian, I’d probably pay $20 a ticket during matinee time, or discount Tuesday. But, I’m not. And I paid $10 and laughed at people in the snack lines who aren’t ingenious enough to smuggle in their own treats. (I’m not saying I do it, I’m just saying.)

I said all that to say this: Wolverine is worth the ticket price. Possibly even the price for a big bucket of popcorn. Usually for big hyped movies that I’m actually hyped about myself, I’d check out the midnight showing. Unfortunately, I was too pooped to party this go-around. And my premiere posse had other obligations that barred them from the late night showings as well. But I still made opening weekend, and that’s good enough for me. Another day I’ll discuss why I enjoy midnight and opening weekend movie screenings.

I still haven’t really talked about the movie yet. I’m full of tangents. It’s just like the other day, when I was being chased by a three-legged dog on the highway… Sorry. Wolverine is set 10-15 years before the first X-Men movie’s event. Thus, that makes this movie a prequel and not necessarily X-Men: Part 4 (I heard rumor that this is a separate movie in the works). The full title is X-Men Origins: Wolverine which clearly says “Hey! This is where Wolverine comes from!’ And it does so quite nicely. If you only know of the X-Men through the movies, then this film definitely helps you to understand the complex titled character. This is especially true if you ever wondered what really happened in X2 concerning Stryker and Wolverine. Let me say this now, you’ll probably want to watch the first two movies again after watching this… that is if you’ve seen them before. I’ve seen them all many times. What can I say, I’m a fan.

What makes this movie fun for seeing in a theater is the action-packed special effects scenes laced throughout the film. It’s visually stunning with loads of eye candy and quite a few money shots or “hero shots”, as I call them. You know, the hero walks towards the camera as something explodes behind him. Or said character is being blasted away from a similar explosion. Usually in slow motion. It pretty cliché but I’m not complaining.

For those familiar with the X-Men characters, you’ve got Wolverine slashing though everything, Sabretooth running up buildings and growing fingernails, a young Cyclops blasting up buildings, Emma Frost being sparkly, Deadpool being hilarious and awesome with his swords, and my favorite–Gambit, throwing powerfully explosive cards (and other things) and doing damage with a bo staff. Then there are a couple twists and surprises thrown in. Then the climatic finale fight. And then an ending that will leave you satisfied enough to be happy for a year or so in hopes that they follow up with a sequel soon. Too early to say that’ll happen, but I think chances are high. And then to top it off, three–that’s right–THREE post-credits scenes. That means when the credits begin, don’t move! There is a scene that involves an antagonist mid credits, but I’m talking about all the way at the end. Depending on the theater you’re in, depends on what scene you will see.

Overall, Wolverine is definitely a movie to catch while in theaters. This is what summer popcorn blockbusters are all about! I suggest leaving the tiniest kids at home, unless they know who Wolverine is and understand movie-going etiquette. There’s considerable violence, but little to no blood while the violence is happening. You know Wolverine has these claws and uses them more than just to threaten or slash open doors, yet you never see any blood on them. The same goes for other deadly characters that kill or are killed. With that kind of realism, the movie would be bumped up to an R rating probably. But its popcorn season and film makers want as many seats filled as possible. So get there immediately, or go see it again.

holding out for some heroes (until the fall)

I’d like to open up discussion for the Heroes season three finale. Technically, volume 4 finale. No reruns tonight. It’s been a week since the season finale aired. You’ve had time to catch up. So it’s fair game to talk about, especially for those who might have Heroes withdrawal already. But I will say SPOILER ALERT to be fair for those that are like me, and watch shows a month or so after the air date.

I’m upset with the big fight scene with Sylar, Peter and Nathan. I understand why they did it, to see if Peter managed to get Sylar’s power… but still. Only showing flashes of light that flashed on Claire’s face as she watched behind closed doors? Boo! I’m glad network TV is free. I’d want my money back for a fight scene that you don’t even get to see. Especially a fight scene as climatic as that. During the season finale! However, I understand why they did it like that. So they could set up for the twist in the limo when Sylar goes to shake hands with the “President” who really isn’t. Turns out, it was really Peter! And then Peter get’s the upper hand, by stabbing Sylar with that drug that knocks him out.

But having Sylar brainwashed to play the role of a deceased Nathan? Interesting… I don’t really mean that in a good way, but maybe the writers have something cooked up for that twist. I admit, I was shocked that Nathan was the one to be killed off (again). I was under the impression it was a female cast member. Then again, I was under the impression three people would be killed off… or leaving the show… or something. Then I started to worry it might be Hiro. No, not Hiro! Way too early to say, since he was shown walking away at “Sylar’s” burning. (I think, my memory is fading.) So we’ll see what develops next season with that.

What I have a growing interest in is Tracy’s revenge or redemption… I’m not sure. But she formed out of liquid all T2 style to kill a man who wronged her. And she was naked. For stunts like this, and the violence Heroes has already shown, they might need to make the jump to HBO or Showtime. Or maybe Ali Larter just likes being a tease. Let’s not forget, her original Heroes character Nikki/Jessica was an online stripper and call girl for a certain currently deceased senator. I’m just saying.

So after the little teaser for season four, or volume five, will I return for more in the fall? Probably. I’ve been around since the beginning, and it’s been a staple in my Monday nights ever since. Plus I feel as though the show will be as awesome as it once was. A lot of people lost faith in it since the second season. Even I’ll admit it lost me. I personally liked the “Villains” volume, many people didn’t. But you can’t win them all, right? So let’s see where this adventure takes this time, shall we? Your thoughts, feelings, for this season and/or the next, let me know.

what to do during no new tv show blues

It’s season finale season. The time of year when a lot of top favorite shows like to leave you at a wedding/death/twist cliff hanger to ensure your interest in the show so you’ll return in the fall. Or hope they return in the fall. Yeah, sometimes the powers that be will keep you from knowing secrets that may or may not ever be known unless they come out with a companion book, unaired episode or special feature DVD or movie version a year or so later if the viewership isn’t large enough to keep the show on the air. Some Arrested Development fans still aren’t forgiving FOX.

Today, NBC announced what shows they will or will not bring back for the fall, as well as some new shows line up. Meanwhile, EW resident gossip guru on all things TV has some scoop on the possibilities on TV shows’ fates.

The big news everyone is waiting to hear about is what’s going to happen to Chuck. Unfortunately, at this time, that’s a show I’m not onboard with. To date, I haven’t seen a single episode. So I can’t be on either side of the fence, but I can tell you what: I’ll DVD and Hulu to catch up to see what all the hoopla is all about.

That’s what the summer is for in TV land. TV networks know this, and they usually air reruns, special news fillers or a brand new TV show that didn’t quite make the cut to be in the fall season’s lineup. But hey, at least they are on TV, right? Chances are, they won’t be back next year (not always true).

For me, this is when I would catch up on shows I’m usually not home to see. My dearest sister and her husband would constantly contend that I lack the benefit of DVR. I’ll possibly have that in August. In the meantime, I’ll take Hulu and other shows streamed online. Plus that’s free.

This year, the TV shows I plan on doing some catching up on: How I Met Your Mother, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Dexter (season 3, whenever it’s released), Lost (seasons 4 and 5), Extras, Weeds, and Chuck. Not sure what else, but we’ll see as time goes by. And this is also considering I’m actually home or in front of a TV to watch these shows. Because it’s summertime. That’s another big reason TV show’s end around May: people start going outside. So make sure you get some sun, some rain (be careful if there is lightning, watch it from inside), and even some moon and starlit skies. But when you are done being burnt or attacked by bugs, the TV will be waiting for you.
