I really want to say that this video speaks for itself with simplicity, soul and style. But on one hand, some people might not see/hear that, and on the other hand, I just said it… and that’s the point of me writing about it. But I say that to say, this video is amazing because of how simple it is. And I think Maxwell would agree with me that it’s all about the music. There’s nothing big and flashy going on. Well, not in the in-your-face special effects or props, sense. It’s just Maxwell singing his heart out, with silhouettes of his band behind him. That’s really the key here, I think, that makes this unique. Surely it could be simple shadows, but then it goes further in the special effects to contrast those shadows into something brighter. There’s also a sexy lady that Maxwell could possibly be singing to, or maybe she’s just feeling it and singing with him. And what the stank is that at 1:44? I’m not sure of the language, but it gives it an added coolness that it’s not in English.
I read that it invokes a Sam Cookian quality to it, which I would agree. That whole Ed Sullivan Show vibe. And let’s not forget both Sam and Maxwell definitely master soul singing at it’s best. And is it really necessary to mention style? That’s a given. Yet what’s also interesting is the fact that he’s the only one you actually see.
As one might imagine, after watching this video, this song was on repeat for a good hour or so. I start to say to myself, “This dude should get a Grammy,” and then I remember… “Oh yeah, he did. Good job, dude!” Good job, indeed. So for those of you who aren’t up to speed, first of all, where have you been? Secondly, be sure to check him out ASAP. And to Maxwell… when is Part 2, aka blackSUMMERS’night coming out already?!? I can only listen to this current album another 367 times.
