once upon a time, there was a show called “once upon a time”

I’m slacking with the new shows of fall 2011, predicting who will last, what shows I’ll be watching, etc. I’m so late, there have already been a number of cancellations like Charlie’s Angels, The Playboy Club, Free Agents, How To Be A Gentleman… am I missing any? It doesn’t matter, I don’t think anyone is going to miss them. I only watched two of those four shows just to get the flavor of it and predicted it’s demise.

But right now I’m talking about new comer and later fall debut of Once Upon A Time, a sorta retelling or a modern-ish look at classic fairy tales. Actually I live-tweeted the show and decided mid-way that I’d write a review about it. The other boasting property this show has is that it features a couple of the writers from LOST lore. That’s an important fact for later. Read more ›

the facebook vs. the lost dial analysis

Lately, I can’t help but wonder if my “hiatus” from Facebook is having a negative effect on The Lost Dial. Being the tech behind the show, I’m constantly watching how many times our show is listened to, how many people visit the site, pretty much just keeping tabs on visitors. On both Pod Bean and Facebook, numbers seem to  be dwindling. Or perhaps it’s just what every show/podcast in history goes through?

I’ve noticed the dip start to happen around the time I stopped regularly promoting the show on my Facebook wall. In fact, it was part of my experiment. My Twitter followers know I talk about the show quite frequently. Ironically, the days I’m most quiet (on Twitter) are the days I’m in the studio. It’s hard to keep up with tweeting about what we’re talking about or what we did talk about when you’re in the flow. Plus, after the show, we tend to have a “debriefing” and discuss how the show went, plans for next week, plans for the rest of the day, and what inappropriate thing Barb recently said. (Listen to the show to find out more about that.) Read more ›

“art & copy” film review and reflection

Netflix recently recommended this documentary to me based on what I’d assume my like of a string of documentaries I’ve watched recently, and probably my marathon of Mad Men, which is a recent favorite show added to my list of enjoyable TV. For those completely unaware as to what Mad Men is or what it’s about, it’s a drama on AMC about a Madison Avenue advertising company that takes place in the 60’s. Since it’s been on the air and winning Emmy’s, I constantly ignored the show… but I’m going to stop myself from raving of it’s awesomeness since this about Art & Copy. Read more ›

“moon” film review

I personally feel this is a hidden gem of a film. I only know of a few people who have seen this film, and those that have seen it, really love it. The blame game as to who’s at fault for it’s awesomeness I think is shared between writer/director Duncan Jones and underrated actor Sam Rockwell. I may have said this before, but I’m saying it again: doesn’t Sam Rockwell have a great name? But seriously, his acting is great. I liked him since Charlie’s Angels. Seriously. And as for Mr. Jones, that is, son of legendary David Bowie, the film he made after Moon was Source Code. He’s now on my list of directors to keep an eye on.

“source code” film review

I had wanted to see this movie in theaters, but for whatever reason I missed out. And then after renting it, I managed to watch the movie about 3 times before shipping it back. Why? I was mimicking the plot, of course!

No, really I was watching with one of the special features on… which wasn’t as special as I had hoped. But I’ll talk about that later. The movie is about a soldier who is enlisted in a special program to relive the last 8 minutes of someone’s life in order to solve a mystery of a terrorist attack on a train. Read more ›

“the trip (2010)” film review

The Trip is a road comedy starring British comedians Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon. Prior to watching this, I had no idea who Rob Brydon was, but I will say that his portrayal in this film has given me some curiosity of previous works he may have done in the past. Steve Coogan, on the other hand, I’ve seen popping up in various films throughout the years, most recently Tropic Thunder.

I started giving a brief background of who these guys are because the film is a fictional account of their real lives. The script is largely improvised. And that’s sorta where it caught my attention. I think it was also recommended to me for my liking of the film My Dinner With Andre. However, I found a bit more similarities with Sideways. So basically, I guess this film is a foodie version of both films.

“conan o’brien can’t stop” film review

I’ve always considered myself a Conan O’Brien fan, even though it took me a while to admit it. I mean way back when he hosted Late Night, and I found myself watching his goofy antics while I suffered from insomnia. Before that I felt tortured by my best friends whenever we had sleepovers to watch this tall, pale redhead. It was either that or Tom Green. I’ll take Conan over Green any day. Read more ›

operation: awolf

…Or: Absent Without Leave on Facebook. This is to explain where I’ve been, or rather why I haven’t had much of a presence on Facebook for the past couple months.

While I clearly see the many benefits of being on Facebook and having all the connections and interactions aka stalkings, I got curious about something. As I noticed more and more people joining the world’s largest social network, would anyone notice if I disappeared? Read more ›

have i been missed?

So it’s been 2 months to the day since my last blog post. For that, I apologize. I still very much love and care about my beloved blog and those that read it religiously or happen to stumble on it thanks to a random search, or linked from a friend. Nevertheless, thanks for your visit(s) and I hope you come back and continue reading! Don’t forget the #1 way to catch up with me is on Twitter.

In short, a lot has happened to me in two months time, and I felt it’d be quicker to review those events with a video, but it would actually take me longer to produce a video than it would to write. Sooner or later I might get back on a regular blogging schedule. If only that was a benefit of fiber. Read more ›

sbtrkt’s “wildfire”

I haven’t done a friPod post in what feels like a millenia so there’s been a lot of music I’ve discovered that I haven’t discovered with you. Call me a selfish, greedy hoarder. I know most of you do anyway. But I’m sharing this one because I recently became apart of the Spotify craze and also just discovered SBTRKT… which I’m assuming is to be pronounced “subtract” and they are of the dub-step brand… a genre of music I was introduced to a few months ago but never cared for until I stumbled upon it on my own. Anyway, this song “Wildfire” in particular I had on repeat a few times and I tried imaging what I could use it for let alone what a music video would look like. I couldn’t think of anything, so once I was done thinking about how awesome I was, I decided to Google this artist and I come to find they already have a video for this and I assume is their lead single.

The video in itself is weird and kinda trippy, which it probably why I kinda dig it. Having been dosed with so much editing tricks lately, I can gather an idea of how this video was put together. But rather than spoil the magic, I just let myself sweat along with way this music sounds and how much this cutie is suffering.

Thoughts? I’m still listening to their album on Spotify. It’s pretty good. I mean both Spotify and SBTRKT.
