is INTERSTERLLAR out of this world or grounded? [film review]

PhotoGrid_1415401392862Last night I got to check out what one of my favorite directors has been up to. Apparently, he had been up in space crafting yet another masterpiece following his wildly successful Dark Knight trilogy and slew of other films like Inception and The Prestige. But one of many questions one might be wondering is “how does this film rank with his previous ones?” Honestly, I don’t know who would be asking that questions because if you don’t know what you’re in for by now when you walk into a Nolan film, then you’ve never seen any of his movies. what’s wrong with “gotham”?

Last night was the premiere of one of the most anticipated shows for the 2014 Fall season. Especially for fanboy geeks like myself, I practically told people I wouldn’t be hanging out with them unless they were seated next to me in front of the TV at 8 pm. And from the looks of the ratings and the fact that #Gotham has been trending long after the pilot aired, it shows that others stopped to watch too. (To be fair, it didn’t “win” the ratings according to the numbers, but performed well and is still being discussed.) Read more ›

the problem with gospel music

Back when I was a wee lad in my 99.9% black Baptist church and living in a 67.6% white neighborhood, I lived a simple albeit semi-sheltered life. I can tell you that my range of musical tastes pales in comparison to what I listen to now. If it wasn’t made by Disney or Michael Jackson, I wasn’t having it. But there was also the church music I grew up listening to and obligated to sing in the children’s choir at my church. Songs that bring back nostalgia… as I’m skipping down memory lane now. Excuse my disgruntled face, I just can’t believe I was into windbreakers back then.

“transformers: age of extinction” film review

To be brief, for once, I’m going to get straight to the point. I highly enjoyed this film! I predict Oscar nominations!* Much like the rest in the franchise, I don’t go to see these movies for thought-provoking storytelling or intense character development. I go to see giant robots fighting giant robots and destroying things with explosions. And if that’s what you go for, you won’t be disappointed either.

However, I must agree with probably the vast majority of reviews for this film in one of it’s major flaws is that this movie is about 30 minutes too long. In fact, each installment has been increasing it’s running time and it’s not like we as an audience haven’t noticed. Perhaps it wouldn’t be so bad if there was more substance to it? Who am I kidding… I get second thoughts anytime I see a running time over 150 minutes.  Read more ›

“x-men: days of future past” film review

While I did attend the global premiere in New York back on May 10th, this review will only be limited to my opinion of the film and not the experience (or “x-perience” as it was promoted) of that event.  That write up will be coming shortly. However, due to the nature of how the film was viewed, my experience was not advanced but enhanced.

Typically with big blockbuster summer popcorn munching comic book superhero movies such as this, I’m in a midnight (or earlier) screening the day before the official release date. This is a time reserved for the nerdy geeky types, whether they are film aficionados or live in the comic books… or a little bit of both. I have to put that forward there because who you see a movie with, and the kind of setting you’re in, makes a difference. For example, if the theater cheers as soon as the film starts, you’re about to watch a film with a live audience. On May 10th, I was with the liveliest movie theater audience ever, and it was great!

So don’t expect me to give you a summary of this outing of our beloved Wolverine and friends romp as way too much happens. I mean that in a good way. If you haven’t figured it out by now with all the posters and trailers and interviews, this film involves time travel and one of the popular arcs from the comic book (and the classic 90’s cartoon, if that’s what you grew up on like me). Like most films based on the source material, it took it’s liberties to make for better story. Don’t ask me the differences, I generally accept a movie for what the filmmaker delivers and judge it on that. And my ruling? Read more ›

“godzilla” film review

2014-05-15 21.17.36ROAR!

It’s not often I get to start a review that way and it be relevant to whatever I’m writing about. But those that know me, know that I would say it anytime, anywhere, regardless of relevance. In any event, Godzilla has a signature trademark battle cry that I believe even the weest of children will be familiar with.

Unlike X-Men: Days of Future Past, I did not get a super advanced screening of this film. However, I did see it early Thursday evening and relatively close to home without having to wait in horribly long lines for a disgustingly long amount of time. More on that later. But I will say that I appreciate these summer blockbusters doing these midnight showings way before midnight.

So let’s get a few preliminaries out of the way for those that aren’t familiar with what this particular Godzilla is all about. This is not a sequel nor a remake of the 1998 version that terrorized Manhattan with Mathew Broderick. This is considered a reboot of the original classic from 1954 when Godzilla first started terrorizing cities. No I haven’t see it (yet) but I hear that it’s better than it make look. No worries, you don’t need to see any previous Godzilla films to enjoy this one. Read more ›

“the amazing spider-man 2” film review

The_Amazing_Spiderman_2_posterIs it okay to use part of a movie to describe the movie? I found The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (TASM2) to be quite amazing. I went with the right crowd early Thursday evening: my eldest niece and nephew, and a theater with maybe 2/3 full of fanboys. In fact, there was a fairly muscularly fit dude sitting in front of me with a super tight Spider-Man t-shirt… or muscle shirt? Maybe it was part of the actual costume? Regardless, he owned it. Kudos.

But the film picks up relatively soon after TASM1 left off. Considering I was with my niece who had failed to see the first one, her experience proved you didn’t need to see the first to enjoy the second, so that answers that question if you’re wondering if you need to see the first. However, I’d still highly recommend seeing the first, as Sony is about to have their own Marvel Universe, albeit with only Spider-Man and his rogues gallery of colorful villains. Anyway, we find Spider-Man doing his thing, enjoying being Spider-Man and enjoying the company of his lady friend Gwen Stacy. The point strongly made clear is the promise Peter Parker made to Gwen’s father about keeping away from her due to the dangerous life he leads as being a superhero. It’s sad and haunting. my chief blessing

2013-04-15 17.47.52One year ago today I received one of the best blessings in my life. Chief, my chihuahua. But what many of my friends and those who have seen this terrified little dog don’t know, is that this has been a desire for a very, very long time.

I can’t pinpoint how many years I’ve wanted a chihuahua specifically, but I know it dates back to my pre-high school era. I had at least three chihuahua themed posters on my wall. I believe it was around this time I did get my very first dog, Maxy. Maxy was a mixed breed that would have been a stray as the owner didn’t care much for the mother let alone the puppies she just had. She looked like a mini German Sheppard, but like Chief, she was terrified of everything. I had Maxy for a few years and sometime after we moved, we gave her away to someone that I thought could take better care of her, as I was having a hard time juggling high school and working a part time job. Not long after we gave her away, she got loose from her new owner and that was the last we ever saw of her. I felt bad about that whole incident, and from time to time I’d miss her and miss having a dog. That was back maybe around 2001? I even made a chihuahua from clay during my art class that people swore was real. Read more ›
