Long story short, I haven’t had time to write a friPod post today due to an all day drive to lovely Niagra Falls. As I type, I’m being entertained by a free concert in the park. I’m ashamed to admit I have no idea who’s playing (Matt Dell?). They are ok. They are new. It’s free.

In the far background you can seel the Falls. On the left is a group of Spanish tourists, probably celebrating their World Cup win.

Right now a comedienne is up. She’s not doing so well. Even the Spanish left.

But it’s free and there’s guarenteed fun later.

a night at foxwoods

In retrospect, I don’t think my adventures at Foxwoods Casino would be as long as a read as my adventures in New York, and technically, this POST should have been posted the day after the NY trip, and not a month later… but here we go.

We arrived around 5 pm to check in. I was told that due to my checking in with a bank card, the money would be taken out of my account immediately. Which was fine by me, I had just got paid. Yes, yes yall! Anyway, I had also received my AAA discount ’cause that’s how I roll, son. I’m sorry, I don’t know where this is coming from.
So first let me back up to arriving at the casino. There are three entrances. We wanted the main entrance so we could self-park in their underground garage. Silly me, giving directions, I told Kitten the wrong way and we almost got valet parking (which I later found out is a free service… I think). Anyway, we had to drive completely out onto the main road in order to get back in. I personally think that’s kinda crazy… but I’m not running the casino, so I have no say in the matter.
We take the elevator up to the hotel lobby. I’ll also chime in here to say that Foxwoods has four hotels. The elevator from the garage lifted us to the lobby of a hotel we weren’t staying in, which meant we had to go back to the elevator, rise to the casino level, then trek across to another elevator area, and go down to the other lobby of our hotel. Fortunately, our room was literally right next to the elevator. And when we wanted to go to the casino, it brought us right on the floor. They got points from me for that.
One main reason we were there was for the Hard Rock Cafe. If you’ve never eaten there, they have some very great food and lots of things all over their walls to keep you busy while you wait for your food. However, the place isn’t very cheap. This is also why we planned to go after payday. Unfortunately, a wedding party possibly had the same plan too. Or at least we assume it was a wedding party. My guesstimating puts this rowdy bunch of folk at about 40 or 50 people. Drunk people. Loud drunk people. At the Hard Rock, they play good rock n roll in the background while you eat. We couldn’t hear any of it. It was pretty bad. Our waitress apologized profusely. Due to limited talking (since we couldn’t hear each other) we were done with our food sooner than usual. We were also a little frightened of the other patrons.
Now this wasn’t our first time to Foxwoods, but we thought we should go in style. Unfortunately (again) no pictures were taken of us, so you can’t see how sexy-cool we were. But we were also “poor” as we like to say.
And how do poor people roll at the casino? With rolls of coins! That’s how. A few days before we left, we counted and rolled quarters, nickels, dimes, and finally, pennies. We took these with us and had an adventure finding a cashier who would exchange them for bills, since these slots no longer allow the use of coins. Bummer. The lady looked a little perplexed that we both showed up with $16 in rolls of coins. We both had $36 each, but left our rolls of quarters for later use (we never used them). Besides that, the machines didn’t taken $1 bills, yet had $1 games. Go figure. We found the 5 cent and 1 cent games and tried our luck. For once, I won something. $50! However, Kitten would contend we won $20 since it took our $30 to do it. But the ticket the machine printed out said $50, and that’s what I’m saying I won.
After a glorious victory, we went back to our room again to give our feet a rest. We admitted that we were still in pain from the day before in the city. We both decided to change our shoes, so we looked a tad bit more casual than the formal sexy-cool we were earlier. I mean, we were still sexy-cool, don’t get it twisted! This time in our outing, we just went to explore the rest of the resort and check out the newest addition: the MGM Grand.
It was a long walk to get there. But it was certainly nice. We cashed in our ticket and got our $50. We wandered around and found an Apple store, a bunch of cool but expensive restaurants, and overall, the place made me think of Ocean’s Thirteen. Who am I kidding, the entire time I was there I was thinking of the Ocean’s movies. I brought Eleven but our room lacked a DVD player. Kitten had never seen the movie, so what a perfect time to show it, right? On our journey back to the other side of the resort, we ran into some promoters who gave us tickets to a free show. The tickets weren’t really for the show at the Hard Rock, but to get free drinks.
We go back to our room and hang out until the show begins. We actually got distracted reading the room service menu and how ridiculous the prices sounded. But we arrived to a moderately full house and got a table close to the stage. We ordered the same drinks we had earlier that night as we discover the band called “Sugar” is actually a cover band that has about 8 members to it. About 4 of them sing, 2 of the guys play instruments and sing a few leads, and 2 girls were the main singers (even for guy songs they covered) as well as dancers. Dancers that didn’t have a lot of variety to their dances. But whatever, it’s a free show.
We observed lots of interesting people. A group of friends came in, one of which was very drunk and a bit of a jerk. He threw up on the table and his girlfriend walked him out. She came back pissed off and appeared to get the other friends to leave with them. Eventually the dude came back, left, came back, and left again. It was weird. The friends never left and partied at the stage. Two old dudes that looked like a mix of unpopular retired rockers and Siegfried and Roy roamed the restaurant. What we didn’t know was that they were on the prowl. Siegfried asked this one older lady to dance by offering his hand. She declined, and he went back over to his friend after that song ended.
I have to admit, the band was pretty good. Laughable, but good. We enjoyed joking about them and their dancing, or their singing because it couldn’t quite compare to their originals. However we appreciated their range in song choices. We knew a vast majority, but they lost us on the occasional few.
Being at the Hard Rock Cafe during this time was the highlight of my night. Maybe even possibly that week. We danced for half a song to a song we couldn’t really dance to, but we had lots of fun.
We retired to our room after the show ended around 1 am. We awoke around 8 or 9 am, washed and packed, and headed to our favorite hot spot: Dunkin Donuts. We were a little surprised to see the price of coffee costing almost an extra dollar more! Criminals! Soon after, we checked out, and returned home.
I had been a little worried that day and a few days after because my back account never showed a transaction that I got the room. Did that mean we stayed for free? Was there an error and the casino bosses were going to send some men after me to get their money back a la Ocean’s? No. It showed up a few days later, leaving my account looking pretty empty. Now I must eat buttered toast until my next paycheck. But it was worth it to enjoy an expensive yet budgeted vacation as a lower-to-mid middle class citizen. So you too can spend a day in NYC or a night at an elite casino resort like Foxwoods. However, the next time, I’d want to stay at the Grand. I better start saving for that one now.

adventures in the big city

I spent a vast majority of  last Thursday in the Big City, aka Manhattan. I must say that it was indoob a delight. We had a great time. We, being myself, my best friend Kitten and my New Yorker cousin Kim, whom I’ve last seen the last time I got myself lost in the city back in my Purchase days.

Kitten and I took the train from New Haven, which required us to park miles away from the station and walk there. Okay, it wasn’t that bad, but we weren’t looking forward to the return hike. Especially since the weather wasn’t looking too promising. Our entire day was covered in clouds, and on occasion we were welcomed with a mist to a light drizzle. If there was any real rain going on, we were fortunate and blessed enough to be sheltered in a dry warm place.

So the train ride was fun. I don’t get to ride the train very much and it was surprisingly cheaper than I expected it to be. $28 round trip! Off-peak times of course. But it was all good. We spent a good hour, hour and a half looking out the window or watching other boarding passengers that looked weird or amusing to us. For example, a group of kids not too much younger than us that had the same NY destination caught our attention. One girl brought an entire salon kit: she first did her make-up, then her nails. I mean really did them. Filed, buffed, and applied special creams and everything. There was also a man who we thought was talking to us or the passenger in front of us, but we were mistaken and also relieved when he got off at the next stop.

We arrived at Grand Central and exited onto 42nd St. I couldn’t tell you the actual way we were going, but it was the wrong way from where I wanted to go. What was my goal this trip? 30 Rockefeller Center, home of one of my favorite TV shows: 30 Rock. We were also super hungry, so we figured we’d get food first.

We jokingly kept a running tally of how many Starbucks compared to Dunkin Donuts we found. I think from the streets we were on, we had Starbucks as the winner 2:1. We are D&D people by the way. We headed towards Times Square in search of a favorite pizza place we ate at a couple years before. But alas! ‘Twas gone! And it looked like it was turning into some makeup store or something. I don’t know, but it didn’t feel right. An awesome pizza place in the heart of Times Square now vanished! Evil villains! So we went to a Sbarro instead. We followed up with a trip to Hershey’s store before continuing on to our destination.

After a few wrong turns (again, it was my fault), we finally found the GE building I was searching for. By the way, my handy-dandy state of the art nifty phone was nigh-battery death. So using my GPS navigator was out of the question and was primarily used to keep in contact with Kim, whom I kept telling our current location to meet us, which didn’t help her because we kept walking. After reaching 30 Rock, we went into the NBC gift store and admired TV shows past and present and their memorabilia. I didn’t buy anything. I really wanted to take the tour, but the next tour wasn’t for another hour and a half. Surely we could come back later. And we planned too. We never did.

Salvador Dali & t. sterling: Artists de la Surreal

We headed off towards the public library where we decided to wait for Kim to catch up. Once she joined the party, we were off to Madame Tussauds. This is where I can stop talking and let the pictures speak for themselves. This was a fun experience and I recommend people visit this place if they never have. (The captions on my Facebook album are better, by the way.)

After the wax museum, we got ice cream at Cold Stones, which was across the street. This is another hot spot for the Kitten and I. Next stop, the Empire State Building.

Like I mentioned before, the weather hadn’t really been on our side. Due to the cloud cover over the city, and much of New England that day, visiting the observation deck of a skyscraper wasn’t in our best interests since there was 0% visibility. However, due to events beyond the Empire’s control, the tour gave us a 1/2 price for another attraction called the NY Skyride which was a helicopter simulation of a tour through NYC. I might want to add here that this ride isn’t for the weak stomach. I was expecting a nice relaxing tour, with some gentle man or woman showing you the best places to visit. No, this is more like a ride found at Disney World where your seat moves along with the giant screen in front of you, rocking back and forth, jolting here and there… Kitten and I admitted to closing our eyes a couple times just to help settle our nerves. Overall, it was mildly fun if you leave out the sick-inducing part. By the way, it’s hosted by an amusing Kevin Bacon (in which he constant refers to previous movies he’s been in while play six degrees of separation) and annoying song called “I am New York” which we told Kim she must learn and sing for us later.

By this time, it was almost time to go. We hit up a couple stores on 34th since Kitten and I made a pact to buy ourselves something. What did we buy? Belts. That’s right, belts. And wouldn’t you know it; the belt I bought was too big? I have to put a hole in it later. An ongoing dispute had been going on about what the name of a certain movie was called that involved a miracle on a numbered street in Manhattan. Miracle on 42nd St? Miracle of 54th St? But we figured it out once we saw Macy’s on 34th

We walked back to Grand Central, killed some more time in the shops there before it was time to board our train. We said our goodbyes and hopped on a car that looked like it had some good seats. I was mistaken; it was right next to the bathroom. We endured a stench for a good (or bad) 90 minutes. The last 10 minutes I avoided the mysterious blue liquid coming from the bathroom. We aren’t sure why it started leaking from the bathroom, but we didn’t hang around long enough to find out.

After we arrived back in New Haven, we had to trek back to the car that was parked what felt like 34 football fields away. My feet were screaming and continued screaming after I got home when Kitten dropped me off. My phone hadn’t been screaming because it died probably hours before I got home. I charged it enough to order some food and then called it a night.

Despite the gloomy weather, sleep inducing train ride, cab drivers who ignored walk signals and red lights, brazen pigeons, tiredly sore feet, and being poked/stabbed/attacked by unnecessarily opened umbrellas, I had a really fun day as I usually do. I heart NY.

vacation is over

1000 apologies to all the Indoobians that once again missed out on my last friPod post. It’s not like you don’t know what it’s going to be about, but that’s not the point. The point is that I strive for consistency and… well… life happened, more or less. So did work. Now that my little getaway vacation has come to an end, I just wasn’t ready to let go.

But no worries. When I wasn’t working as hard as I probably should have been, I had been documenting my experiences in both New York and Foxwoods Casino. I also have several pictures online from a run in with several celebrities! (They were all made out of wax, but let’s pretend they were real.)

I’m really just trying to get used to being back at my desk and working hard like I’m known to do (wink wink). “How’s that going so far?”, you ask. Yesterday I rather not talk about, but I did return all of the voicemail messages I had (a total of about 10… 5 of which were the same person, 2 didn’t leave a message and I think one of those was actually a fax machine, and one that I called back went to a fax amchine… go figure). So I was definitely busy, I just didn’t feel busy or productive. Then I got distracted by making dinner, which seems to be my thing now on Monday nights. Last night’s meal was baked chicken brought to you by the shaking and baking seasoning method (but not the brand name) with a few added seasonings of my own. I also made ziti with homemade alfredo sauce. I made a side of broccoli that lacked some seasoning of some kind. All in all, my parents enjoyed it. I ate it because I was hungry. I really wanted to make myself some bacon and eggs. Ironically, I don’t feel like making them today.

Anyway, I just want you all to hold tight. I’ll probably post an entry once a day for the rest of the week (or make an attempt) discussing my recent trips, the last friPod iPick, and other stuff I normally like to write about… like what you won’t be watching this fall on TV. And if you are an entertainment junkie like me, chances are you already know what will and will not be on the air. What you don’t know is what I’ll be watching. This gets interesting when we discuss why Thursday nights is now a chaotic night and a good reason to have a DVR. All that and more starting tomorrow… as long as I get my real work done.

getting down to the business of vacation

I won’t lie. I’m not even going to try to pretend I’ve been super busy these past few days. I am on vacation. It’s not what I’d consider a “real vacation” like the one I planned a few months ago, but I’m not at work and I’m getting paid for the time off… so that’s a decent definition of a vacation.

Besides, it’s not like I haven’t been doing anything.

Monday I was at the Basketball Hall of Fame. I went with the Kitten and her siblings to pass the Memorial Day. I found out that back in the day, the players used to wear knee pads. Also, their jerseys looked more like sweaters without sleeves. And some of these jerseys were actually onesies (I’m not sure how it would be spelled, but it’s the one piece undershirt normally worn by babies). It was definitely interesting. I learned that I could get a rebound ball at 8’10”. And later I lost to a young punk in a game of Horse that I didn’t even want to play. I even broke a sweat! I didn’t go there for that! Later, we all went to the park and kinda forgot that Memorial Day is also National Get Out The Grill and Cook Some Food Day. But we managed to find a spot on the grass and even found some ducks that weren’t too full to eat our moldy bread.

Tuesday I went into the office. My job had set up a mandatory department meeting that required everyone to come into the office (instead of calling up on the phone). They tried to entice us with food before, but that wasn’t enough. So they put the hammer down and demanded our presence. I hadn’t been to the office since… hmm… last year? I can’t say… but it’s been a long time. So long, in fact, that one of my co-workers that I got hired with thought I had been fired. Actually, he thought 75% of the people who currently work at home had been fired. In my opinion, he’s not quite the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I’m not prepared to be his sharpening stone.

It was nice to see all these people together. Unfortunately, I hadn’t really known many of them long enough and I still felt like a new kid on the block. Plus, all my other friends either moved to another department or no longer work there. I spoke to those I knew (and a few of those are fellow Indoobians), and even talked to a few I never talked to before. This was due to the video game room they set up. Oh yeah, they added some perks besides catered food, like a video game room, card games, and a story board of some kind where you add one line at a time to an ongoing story. I never made it to that story area, shame on me and my writer skills. I was too busy playing Mario Kart and eventually some Wii Sports like golf and tennis.

And there was actually a meeting too, which was why we were there in the first place. That was set up differently too. Not one person spoke much more than five minutes until they turned the meeting into a Family Feud game show. Seriously. After the meeting, we took a group photo that I know I wasn’t in (the photographer show much effort to get us all in the shot). Then after the games and raffle prizes, we all got a good bag, stocked up on desserts, and went home. I was already mentally turned off from work, so when I returned home, I went back to bed before being rudely interrupted by a very dirty text message. (If curiosity is getting the best of you, ask me what it was.)

Later, the macaroni & cheese torch was passed to me and I made my special brand of a dish most people in my family know how to make very well. And now, so do I. It was so cheesy and delicious.

Wednesday Kitten and I roamed the mall for a much longer period of time than we normally do. You see, we aren’t rolling in dough, so we can’t afford to just do or go anywhere. So we window shopped for a couple hours in stores that we normally spend about 10-15 minutes in. And it was fun! After that, we went to my favorite diner in Middletown before realizing we could’ve made the same exact sandwiches we ordered at home for free. Then, we counted and rolled coins. That’s right; on our days of vacation we poor folk wrapped quarters, nickels and dimes. We didn’t have any penny papers, so those are stacked in the middle of her floor.

‘Twas also our last Spanish class. Kitten couldn’t make it due to a karate test (she chose the violence over langauge… I jest). There’s no final exam or anything like that. This was only just to better ourselves and further our educations and possibly even our future employments. Like I may have mentioned, I personally felt bad for flunking out in high school (Spanish class only) and I wanted to relearn the beautiful language without having to worry about grades. Now if I did take it in college, I’d have a much better understanding. I just need to watch more Telemundo and then I can talk to those sexy latinas in both languages. Anyway, kudos to an awesome Spanish teacher that was ten times better than the teachers I had in high school.

But the best part of my week is yet to come… Hopefully pictures will be involved and maybe even posted. But I’ve made empty promises before, so believe it when you see it. Sorry.
