“iron man 3″ film review

I may have fibbed to a few people when I said I’d be doing a video review for this film. I apologize. I almost shot a video in my car moments after leaving the theater, but I was way too sleepy. Kudos to the theaters having earlier premieres than midnight. Some of us have work on Friday morning (that I almost slept through). But hey, this film declares summer is here!

IM3 picks up some time after last years mega hit The Avengers. Tony Stark is having serious anxiety problems, most of which stem from the events in that film. I say that so people who have admitted to me they haven’t seen IM1 or 2 can skip to Avengers just to get familiar with what’s going on so they can see this one. Anyway, besides Stark’s personal demons, he has a new villain to face by the name of The Mandarin. I had to run over to Wikipedia just to get a background on who he is and what he does. I’m not going to explain here. Kudos to the brilliant actor Sir Ben Kingsley. The plot mostly comes from the Iron Man story arc “Extremis” which for a while was on Netflix Instant. (more…)

the spider-men comparison: sequel vs reboot

To make my life easier as a lazy writer, the 2002 Spider-Man (and it’s sequels) will just be OSM and 2012 The Amazing Spider-Man will be TASM. Got it? Good.

Now it’s come to my attention that there are folks out there that are confused as to why Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst from OSM are no-shows in this new version known as TASM. I will admit, I may have been a bit lazy in my recent review in detailing what the difference is between this reboot and the original franchise. But I think the best way to explain it is chronologically. (more…)

Hopefully I can do these more often. Also, at least with the blog, anything I forgot to say I can write it here. But if you didn’t catch my point, I’m recommending you see this immediately!

I’ll be honest and say I wasn’t expecting it to be as good as it was. In fact, I wasn’t even planning on seeing it in theaters. But I’m glad that I did. Summer has officially begun.

“the artist” film review

It was my intention to write this review before the Academy Awards aired on Sunday night. I decided to run out to a theater still playing what was later awarded Best Picture of 2011 late Saturday afternoon, and to my surprise, I found myself in a packed theater. Sadly, due to the time I arrived, I had to sit in one of the seats close to the front. That was my only problem with this film, but it was my own fault.

As for the film, marvelous homage to early cinema! I knew all the hype behind the movie, but as usual, I needed to see it for myself to see if it was legit hype.

True, the major selling point is that it’s a silent movie. The black & white aspect isn’t all that spectacular even though it’s employed nicely, a lot of modern movies still do that brilliantly. (more…)

“another earth” film review

I was and still am pretty excited about this movie since it takes place and is filmed in and around the New Haven area. FYI, I’m a Connecticut native and the Elm City is where I was born. However, I didn’t figure this out until later in the film when characters were throwing town names around and I had to run to IMDb and Wikipedia. The filmmaker is from New Haven and some scenes were actually filmed in his childhood home.

Anyway, my initial allure to this film came from watching the trailer. I don’t usually include trailers for my reviews (because I’m lazy) but this one I think is beneficial to what I feel is an under appreciated, little know indie flick.

Take note that the lead actress practically tells you the true plot of this film. And after watching this movie, I also must applaud how well done this trailer was made. I’ll explain in 2 minutes… (more…)

“rio” film review

Angry Birds.

That was my main reason for seeing this movie. Specifically Angry Birds Rio, which is the Angry Birds game with a Rio inspired plot, and features the main characters.

The movie itself, I was hoping to see a cameo of an Angry Bird or two, but the closest I could find were the small round squeaky birds. While they weren’t the same birds I fling around on my Droid, they were adorable and I felt sympathetic for them when anything bad happened to them. But leaving the video game alone and talking about the film: good family entertainment for sure. I mean, it’s no Pixar movie, and I can see parents watching just to watch with their kids vs adults enjoying it like, say, Up. I got worried when this was called a musical, but it’s not Rent, so the songs shouldn’t drive anyone crazy. “rise of the planet of the apes” film review

I still have yet to see the original Planet of the Apes, even with all my movie viewing prowess. I never had a strong interest, to tell you the truth. I have seen what has been called the “horrible remake” by Tim Burton. I guess I’d have to original to fully understand why the remake was so bad. But I’m not talking about that film right now, we’re discussing the prequel.

I’ve been hearing a lot of chatter and good things about this installation since it was in theaters. The good news had spread all the way to the Oscars and the exclusion of the performance capturing acting abilities of Andy Serkis. Perhaps they mean the Academy should (more…)

“cowboys & aliens” film review

Rather than waste everyone’s time, I’m going to attempt to keep this one short. I was overall very bored by this movie. I don’t know if it was the time of day I started watching it, the fact that I was already a bit tired after watching a movie before it, or maybe the story was as dry as the dessert the film took place, but I had to fight to stay awake to finish it.

I’m willing to the give the movie a second chance someday, but it won’t be anytime soon. I remember reading reports of how this movie bombed in theaters when I thought it’d surely be a winner. I mean c’mon, the title was intriguing: cowboys and aliens? Starring James Bond and Indiana Jones/Han Solo? What’s cooler than that?! (more…)

“art & copy” film review and reflection

Netflix recently recommended this documentary to me based on what I’d assume my like of a string of documentaries I’ve watched recently, and probably my marathon of Mad Men, which is a recent favorite show added to my list of enjoyable TV. For those completely unaware as to what Mad Men is or what it’s about, it’s a drama on AMC about a Madison Avenue advertising company that takes place in the 60′s. Since it’s been on the air and winning Emmy’s, I constantly ignored the show… but I’m going to stop myself from raving of it’s awesomeness since this about Art & Copy. (more…)

“source code” film review

I had wanted to see this movie in theaters, but for whatever reason I missed out. And then after renting it, I managed to watch the movie about 3 times before shipping it back. Why? I was mimicking the plot, of course!

No, really I was watching with one of the special features on… which wasn’t as special as I had hoped. But I’ll talk about that later. The movie is about a soldier who is enlisted in a special program to relive the last 8 minutes of someone’s life in order to solve a mystery of a terrorist attack on a train. (more…)
