fripodding with british soul: 21 – adele

I wanted to write about this album last week, but I still hadn’t fully listened to all the songs so I’m glad I waited. I absolutely love listening to Adele sing. And I talked about Adele a while ago with her awesome song “Rolling in the Deep” so if you liked that song, I highly recommend you check out the rest of her album.

Since the album starts with “Rolling in the Deep” we’ll just move on to my favorites. I do like all of the songs, but as usual, I like more songs than others. “Rumor Has It” and “Turning Tables” are nice, but I tend to skip them to get to “Don’t You Remember.” While the whole album really showcases her vocal talents, there’s just something about this song that makes me keep playing it over and over again. This may have been the song I felt was Sam Cooke-ian. It just has a classic vibe to it. (I will have to update this later, because I can’t remember exactly what song has this specific classic sound, but she is overall a very soulful singer, which is why it’s hard to pick which song shows the best example.) But again, it’s her voice I love in this song.

Before I go on, the album is titled 21 because she was 21 at the time she wrote all these songs, just like her album 19. And during this year in her life, the majority of her songs are about a breakup, the before and after of it. Not all of the songs are sad and depressing or whatever you would relate to a breakup, and I’ll tell you which one(s) I didn’t have that feeling towards.

“Set Fire to Rain” is a song that’s beginning to grow on me as well as “He Won’t Go” which has a nice uptempo beat to it. It had a very slight Lady Gaga vibe, don’t look too deeply into finding it, because it could just be my own ears. Either way, I like it. “Take It All” has a beautiful piano arrangement, but I really like this song.

“I’ll Be Waiting” is a good song, but honestly I skip it to get to “One And Only” which may be my most favorite song on the album. This is the song I feel isn’t a sad or depressing song, and it doesn’t sound like a breakup song. It has different levels to it too. You just have to hear it to understand.

When I’m not hitting repeat, I happily let “Lovesong” play through. This also doesn’t sound like a breakup song to me, more like a lovely, peaceful ballad of love. Perhaps a memory of better times. Then the album concludes with “Someone Like You” which is a very personal and specific song, which interestingly some people including myself can relate to. It’s a very beautiful song, even though it’s a sad one. I listen to this over and over again due to her beautiful voice, the lyrics, the overall music of this song just grabs my heart. I admit, it almost made me cry, not for the meaning of the song, but the feeling the music gave me.

The album I have has bonus tracks including some live performances. If you can get that version, I highly recommend it. It might be on iTunes, I don’t know, it was a gift to me. “If It Hadn’t Been For Love” is the song that sticks out as being the most awesome of the bonus tracks, besides the live versions of “Turning Tables” “Don’t You Remember” and “Someone Like You”.

Anyway, she’s joining the ranks of my other British soul love, Joss Stone.

What’s up Indoobians? I thought I would have a video ready for you before the day ended, but that doesn’t look like the case. Perhaps I may get to post it tomorrow as a special late edition… or update and just add it to this. To make a long story short, I’ve have a busy day ending a very busy week.

Today, we’re talking about the great and finally appreciated Cee Lo Green. Just like in the video I was making, I made it a point not to talk about the summer smash viral hit that I’ll admit sounds less as awesome in its censored version. I like to keep my blog PG-13 at least (haha). Putting it another way, the album is greater than the one lone single. So if you like that song, I strongly suggest you listen to the rest of the song, and I’ll tell you why. (more…)

fripodding and slacking: albums i’m waiting for this year

This has nothing to do with music

Shame on me… I’ve had a rough and busy week. But no worries Indoobians, I’m working hard on a few other things here and there. Birthdays, fireworks, going-away parties and national holidays. All these events within close proximity to one another and I wonder how celebrities do it. One thing is for sure, they seem to be having fun. I intend to do the same while I make my rounds to these galas I get invited to. Whether I’m the life of the party or I just make a brief appearance, “poke my head in the door: as my dad says (which never works because people recognize him and call him out).

Anyway, since I haven’t had time to properly write up anything special or specific, I thought now would be a good time to tell you the albums I’m looking forward to buying this year.

As I tell lots of people, I rarely listen to the radio. The information I get regarding new music or who to listen to, I learn from word of mouth… or word of the Internets. It’s times like this I rely on friends and reviews from sources like MTV and Entertainment Weekly. I’m picky about who I spend my money on, so I will happily check out the previews on Amazon and iTunes, ask Twitter and Facebook, then make my final judgement which may result in a purchase. I have a few exceptions, whom I call “trusted artists.” This means I would buy their album the day it came out without having to had listened to a single track, and more than likely enjoy most of it. John Legend, Joss Stone, Alicia Keys and Outkast to name a few.

Fortunately, some of those artists are on the list for this year. These are the albums I’m waiting for. (Release dates and titles are subject to change.)

  • Big Boi Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty July 6th
  • Prince 20Ten July 10th
  • Maroon 5 Hand All Over September 21st
  • Kanye West Good Ass Job September
  • John Legend Wake Up Sessions September
  • Common The Believer December
  • Andre 3000 [title TBA]
  • Outkast [title TBA]

More titles may be added. But there are hundreds of titles that can be listed. Plus a select few that have already been released, like The Roots How I Got Over. But to check on that list of future release, check the Metacritic.

Happy Fourth of July. Happy Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, etc. too.

fripodding and flying: the element of freedom – alicia keys

Alicia Keys has been a growing admiration of mine over the years since I first heard her smash hit single “Fallin’”. Yes, she’s come a might long way from those cornrows and that conservative urban look, I think anyway. And it’s a massive understatement if you think I’m just talking about her image. I must be honest, I haven’t listened to all of her earlier work, but I’ve heard enough to know she’s not the same artist as she was back 10 years ago. But that’s probably how long I’ve been a fan. Only recently have I started publically declaring my love for her.

But this post has been a long time coming… well… since I heard this album The Element of Freedom. After the first time I heard the album, I was like “This is what music is all about!” I was going to pick a song, but I’ve listened to the entire album front to back, over and over again and can’t pick just one. This is usually a sign that, hey, I need to talk about all of it. I have similar feelings for the album before it, As I Am.

The lovely superwoman Keys digs deep into her personal life to bring us some of the most beautiful, emotional and instrumental music of her career. This also can be said for As I Am, but we are talking about Freedom today. I would have to agree, I definitely felt a sense of freedom while listening. It’s in the instruments. As I write at the moment, I’m listening to one of the many favorites on my list:

  • “Love Is My Disease.” As my sister and I agree, she really must’ve gone through something to feel this kind of way. But not only is it just her, but I’m sure many of us have felt the same way she has: when you are so in love with someone that you can’t bare to be more than a few feet away from them. For me, this song is more than lyrics. I love the instruments, the drums, guitars, organs, whatever else is playing. I love that she gives a few seconds after a few songs for just more of that instrumental flavor. Like a delicious aftertaste of the sweet and tender plate of the song’s entree.
  • “Wait Til You See My Smile” is a better example of what I mean by that aftertaste. Not only is this a very uplifting song (and personally meaningful to me in recent times when I wasn’t feeling so great), but I also love all the instruments being played around here. The strong drums. She loves drums I can tell. But this song has a strong build, and you can feel it growing, and it makes you wanna do something huge… which is awesome, to say the least.
  • “That’s How Strong My Love Is” tones it down, instrumentally. It’s still a very strong song though, but it’s soft with no drums. Lyrically? Brilliance as usual. Listen to it enough times, it might want to snag a tear from your eye. Again, I think that lends itself more to the instruments again. Still a beautiful song with a beautiful voice and piano.
  • “Distance and Time” is also a favorite of mine. Although it’s sad, I can definitely relate. Not only can I relate, but my best friend feels like this constantly. As endearing as the song is, I’d keep it on repeat because it’s just great music.
  • “How It Feels to Fly” is another uplifting song. Every so often during my day, I found myself humming the chorus not really remembering where I heard it from. Another sign of greatness is when songs just get stuck in your head. But this song coupled with “Wait Til You See My Smile” are part of a self-motivation soundtrack I’m building. This is one of those songs that also lends itself to the album title of Element of Freedom, not just due to the theme of flying, but again, the instruments feels freeing.
  • “Through It All” could fit in the same motivational category, but it’s more of a song talking about supporting someone else. It’s still great in my book. And once again, the drums are keeping a driving beat.
  • “This Bed” I think is probably the most upbeat/up-tempo tracks on the album. It’s not so much the drums this time, but just the way the beat is arranged. But the song itself has a classic feel to it. I can’t figure out what decade it belongs in, but it’s not this one, and that’s what makes this song so good.

I’m not leaving out the lead singles I’ve heard thus far, “Doesn’t Mean Anything”, “Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart” and “Empire State of Mind (Part II).” I have nothing against “Empire…”, I just like Jay-Z’s version a bit better. “Doesn’t Mean Anything” is a song I would leave on repeat, but due to the track listing, I usually let it play right into “Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart.” Without a doubt, I love these two songs.

I can’t help but wonder if “Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart” was somewhat of a response to Alicia’s good friend John Mayer’s song “Dreaming With A Broken Heart”, which is also a beautiful song. I jest, I don’t really think there is a connection there. Anyway, I think this song might possibly be the best or even my favorite on this album. Truth be told, this is another song that struck me personally. It’s appropriately followed by “Wait Til You See My Smile” because “I’m gonna find a way to make it without you.” (I know they aren’t related, but I’m sure there are some people out there that possibly made that connection.)

This song is one of the best due to, again, and I can’t state it enough, the instruments. I don’t even know what all these instruments are, from the deep bass rumblings in the beginning, to what sounds like a machine gun in slow motion, to the sounds of possibly an old fashioned synthesizer keyboard from back in the day. Oh yeah, and Alicia’s stellar voice. I’m still a bit mad I missed her show a couple weeks ago. Oh well, I’ll watch all live events as I sit patiently waiting for her next album.
