“another earth” film review

I was and still am pretty excited about this movie since it takes place and is filmed in and around the New Haven area. FYI, I’m a Connecticut native and the Elm City is where I was born. However, I didn’t figure this out until later in the film when characters were throwing town names around and I had to run to IMDb and Wikipedia. The filmmaker is from New Haven and some scenes were actually filmed in his childhood home.

Anyway, my initial allure to this film came from watching the trailer. I don’t usually include trailers for my reviews (because I’m lazy) but this one I think is beneficial to what I feel is an under appreciated, little know indie flick.

Take note that the lead actress practically tells you the true plot of this film. And after watching this movie, I also must applaud how well done this trailer was made. I’ll explain in 2 minutes… (more…)

“the ides of march” film review

This is, or maybe was, a pretty good example of an “Oscar bait” film. In case you never heard of that term, it’s a film that has grade A acting, directing, writing, etc. It pretty much has to make critics swoon about some aspect of the movie if not the whole thing, and then come awards season, it racks up the nominations to various other awards and may get close, if not winning, the Academy Award itself.

Well, when this movie first came out, I remember it had some of that buzz going for it. But now that the nominations have since gone out, there isn’t as much buzzing about it these days. Don’t get me wrong, it picked up an adapted screenwriting nod, but that’s it. No noms for Gosling, Hoffman, Giamatti, or Clooney (for acting or directing, but he did get one for writing), or Best Film. Perhaps they’d be well deserved if some of the other better films weren’t chosen or released last year. Perhaps. (more…)

about last night: advertising for advertising

So, how bout those Giants?

Congrats to New York and good try New England. That was a heckuva game they played last night all the way down to the final second. I love a good Hail Mary play.

But not everyone cared about the game itself. When I was young, I was only in it for the commercials. I admit, these days I only tend to watch playoffs and championship games. But whether you love the game or not, many come for the commercials. Maybe the halftime show. (more…)

“horrible bosses” film review

I wanted to start this review by stating plans or the possibility of this film having a sequel. But I’ll get to that later. Honestly, I don’t have a problem with Hollywood wanting to follow up a hit money maker if there is more story than can be told. But without seeing the film and knowing the premise is about employees plotting to kill their employers, it leaves you wondering.

As a stand alone movie, which this works great as (and if you can’t read my subtext–no sequel), it’s a pretty fun caper. And funny. I can’t recall if I had any “side splitting” laughs, but I really enjoyed watching Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudekis play together. (more…)

a new lifestyle – snooze & lose

I think I’ve always had a problem when it comes to staying on schedules I set up for myself. Everything is fine when I’m working for/with others and there is a deadline set, I can meet it or accomplish early. I haven’t quite figured out how to establish that kind of commitment when it comes to my own personal projects. What’s bizarre is that these are projects I want to do.

Blogging, for example, I need to force myself to sit down and write. Sometimes, yes, I am too busy actually doing something else when I have the urge to write. But there are other days that I’m literally staring at the wall, or in other words I could be a lot more productive and make better use of my day. (more…)

“rio” film review

Angry Birds.

That was my main reason for seeing this movie. Specifically Angry Birds Rio, which is the Angry Birds game with a Rio inspired plot, and features the main characters.

The movie itself, I was hoping to see a cameo of an Angry Bird or two, but the closest I could find were the small round squeaky birds. While they weren’t the same birds I fling around on my Droid, they were adorable and I felt sympathetic for them when anything bad happened to them. But leaving the video game alone and talking about the film: good family entertainment for sure. I mean, it’s no Pixar movie, and I can see parents watching just to watch with their kids vs adults enjoying it like, say, Up. I got worried when this was called a musical, but it’s not Rent, so the songs shouldn’t drive anyone crazy. oscar predictions of 2012

I made the follow predictions on the podcast The Lost Dial recorded hours after the nominations were announced on January 24th. You can listen to my predictions in part 1 and part 2. While I might feel a bit differently on possible winners since a few more awards have been given out (SAG, DAG, etc), here are my initial predictions and runner ups. As always, follow me on Twitter while I live-tweet the ceremony on February 26.

My official predictions are in bold. My runner up guesses are underlined. If you compare what I said during the podcast to what’s written below, the only
thing I may have changed are my runner ups… which doesn’t matter if they don’t win anyway since there are no 2nd place Oscars. Also, during the podcast I didn’t have time to research nominees I wasn’t familiar with, like documentaries and shorts. So those predictions are based on previous wins, nominations and ratings according to IMDb.com. (more…)

“rise of the planet of the apes” film review

I still have yet to see the original Planet of the Apes, even with all my movie viewing prowess. I never had a strong interest, to tell you the truth. I have seen what has been called the “horrible remake” by Tim Burton. I guess I’d have to original to fully understand why the remake was so bad. But I’m not talking about that film right now, we’re discussing the prequel.

I’ve been hearing a lot of chatter and good things about this installation since it was in theaters. The good news had spread all the way to the Oscars and the exclusion of the performance capturing acting abilities of Andy Serkis. Perhaps they mean the Academy should (more…)

“cowboys & aliens” film review

Rather than waste everyone’s time, I’m going to attempt to keep this one short. I was overall very bored by this movie. I don’t know if it was the time of day I started watching it, the fact that I was already a bit tired after watching a movie before it, or maybe the story was as dry as the dessert the film took place, but I had to fight to stay awake to finish it.

I’m willing to the give the movie a second chance someday, but it won’t be anytime soon. I remember reading reports of how this movie bombed in theaters when I thought it’d surely be a winner. I mean c’mon, the title was intriguing: cowboys and aliens? Starring James Bond and Indiana Jones/Han Solo? What’s cooler than that?! (more…)

a note regarding vlogs for 2012

Around New Years I made a pledge of sorts to make more video blogs for the Indoob! I recorded a “Best of 2011″ within the first week, but I forgot to include some things in that video and planned to do another soon after. But before I could do that, I had a bunch of videos that still hadn’t been edited yet from other projects.

Time passed and I had to keep putting off the video blogs to get my other projects done, feeling guilty for each missed opportunity. But it’s about priorities. I love my blog and making the Indoob fun for all, but I’m trying to get some business done, and running this blog is more of a hobby. Plus, it takes a lot less time to write than produce a video, hence the reason you’re reading this vs watching me tell you.

In other words, I can’t go out and play until I finish my homework.

So look for my Best of 2011 sometime in the future, along with other things I have planned. In the meantime, it’s the written word and maybe some photography which may or may not be my own.
