fripodding and heavy rotations of 2010

Instead of looking up on iTunes the most played songs, I’m going by feeling and memory (and past friPod posts of this year).

I can’t include albums of the past 2 months for the sole reason that they are too recent, even if I listened to said recent album on repeat for 10 hours on 3 consecutive days. I’m also aiming for albums and not necessarily singles that I’ve listened to repeatedly over the past year. Doing a singles list would be much more difficult. But on with the list (in no particular order this time)… (more…)

fripodding and trapping: the temper trap

Thanks to a fantastic friend of mine who shares many of the same musical tastes as I do, I found a new band I can’t stop listening to. My friend sent me 13 hours worth of music she loves and thought I would love too. To make a long story short, as of this posting, I’ve only gotten through about 3 hours of music and 1 of those hours happened to be the 1- track album called Conditions by an Australian band called The Temper Trap.

I had never heard of them before, but as I went through each song, I kept being blown away. Have you ever been in the mood for just hearing something new as well as really good? On top of that, you might be looking for a sound you just haven’t heard before? Well, that’s what The Temper Trap was for me. After many repeats, I found that certain songs invoked similarities to other artists I’ve heard before, which isn’t a bad thing. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if they were some sort of inspiration. Anyway, one song, “Soldier On” sounded like a Led Zeppelin song to me. Another song, “Fader” (nice music video, btw), had a Maroon 5 vibe to it. This is all in my opinion, by the way. But one thing is for sure, I feel these are some original artists and I may not understand what all of their songs are about, but that doesn’t keep me from looping it dozens of times in a single hour.

Coming soon to the Indoob is a Grooveshark widget feature which I will try out on the sidebar. Eventually I’ll change it up since I’d love for others to be exposed to the awesome music I enjoy regulary. This was brought to my attention by my same friend who introduced me to The Temper Trap, who, on a side note, I may be seeing in a couple weeks in NYC. So perhaps there might be a part 2?

But what in the world has come over me? How have I gone on and on talking about this band and not mention their most famous song which I’m pretty sure you’ve heard quite a few times on TV commercials, movie previews (if not the movie itself) and dozens of other places: “Sweet Disposition.” I think the first time I heard it was from (500) Days of Summer. Or a car commercial. Either way, once I heard those first few notes, I was like “I’ve heard this quite a few times on TV commercials, movie previews (if not the movie itself) and dozens of other places!”

And after listening to them practically all week, I finally peeped a few of their music videos. “Sweet Disposition” has 3, officially. I’m only going to post 2, let me know which one out of the two you like better. I think I like the space one, but the lead singer, Dougie, I like his hat. The songs I like the most are “Rest“, “Fader”, “Love Lost”, “Fools“, “Science of Fear” (another awesome video) and “Sweet Disposition.” Not necessarily in that order, but like I said, it’s only a 10 track album and the few I didn’t mention aren’t bad, I just don’t find myself keeping them on repeat as much. But this is one of the few albums I can play straight through without skipping. Sadly, quality albums like this are never long enough for me, hence the repeat button. And I found this fan-made video for “Love Lost” that I thought was pretty cool and I like better than the official, so check it out:

And call me a little crazy, and I don’t blame anyone for thinking I’m trying to make a stretch to connect this band or that last song I played to LOST, but doesn’t the lead singer kinda look like Miles Straume (Ken Leung), or is it just me?

Well I may be back for a special edition and addition post all about how they perform live.  I expect nothing less than great and I can’t wait for their next album… even though this one pretty much just came out.

fripodding and freeing: joss stone

I’ve been listening to Joss Stone for quite a few years now. Those closest to me know that it’s no secret I have a crush on this girl. And it’s a crush that started when I first heard her voice, way before I ever saw her face. (Seeing her face made the crush grow even more.)

I would like to credit myself as being one of her original fans, starting to listen to her when she released her first album back in 2003, The Soul Sessions. At the time, I was more familiar with her song “Fell in Love with a Boy” than I was the original White Stripes “Fell in Love with a Girl”. I will even admit, at the time I wasn’t sure who sang the original. I am much the wiser now and choose to listen to one or the other solely based on my mood.

Speaking of “soul” …every so often I’m on a quest to find some modern day soul singers. Hearing straight R&B is everywhere, and that’s not a problem. But sometimes, I want something deeper. Something I can really feel. Something my idols like Sam Cooke and Marvin Gaye would be proud of. Fortunately, I’ve found it with the likes of Stone. And what I love is that she’s consistent. I can rely on superb soul singing from her each and every time I see her name listed on a song. From a guest spot on a Santana song to performing on any award show. Hey Joss! I’m the son of a preacher man!

What impresses me about her is not just her voice, but how mature it sounds. I think she would fit right in with the 60′s and 70′s. Even with her earlier look, her style of dress seemed to be on the hippie side… which also is not a bad thing. But like me, she’s young in age (a year younger than me, actually) but with a very mature soul and obviously digs the R&B/soul classics, like me. Again, there is nothing wrong with current R&B… other than a handful of artists that seem to sound and/or look the same. I’m attracted to what makes artists different, specifically their voices. I fell in love with hearing her voice. There’s even a specific style, which Joss definitely has.

If you’ve ever seen her perform live (like a video above): always barefoot. That’s sexy. (Don’t forget, I have a major crush on this girl.) As a fellow performer, having performed with others at other venues, I know that for some people, performing barefoot might be more of a spiritual thing as well as artistic. It all depends on the person. Meaning, for some, it keeps them connected to Mother Earth, so to speak. At least that’s what they tell me. Others? They are just more comfortable. The only time I see being barefoot as a problem is if you’re a tap dancer.

But back to Joss. I feel a little sad that she is not as well known as some of my other favorites like Alicia Keys or John Legend. In a strange way, I’m kinda glad about that because it makes me feel like I found a secret. A jewel that has ultimate worth, but very few people are aware so I can bask in the wonders. Then one day, everyone discovers what I’ve always known. By then, all I’m entitled to is bragging rights. I wouldn’t really care though, I’d just be happy she’d be getting the spotlight.

And I know there are people that know about her. She’s even dabbled into some acting. I’m ashamed to admit, I haven’t seen anything she’s been in yet. I know what they are, I just haven’t seen them yet.

And what a lousy fan I am. She’s been on tour a few times that I may have been able to see and missed her at least twice so far! And the first time I missed her, she was touring with John Legend of all people! SERIOUSLY? Yeah, I was a little upset about this. Then when she was touring again, had I chose to follow through with purchasing a ticket, I would’ve had to choose between a Legend concert or a Stone concert. Needless to say, I didn’t see either.

But since Ms. Stone celebrates her 23rd birthday on the 11th, I chose to write about her today. So happy birthday Joss Stone. Here are a few more of my favorite songs.

I literally just heard this and needed to post it. “People Get Ready” is an all time favorite song of mine and didn’t know she did a cover… and boy did she cover it.

And I happened upon this fun music video that I didn’t know existed. I’m really digging it and I would just like to say, I’d happily trade places to be with this crazy girl.

fripodding and heavy rotating: top played artists… kinda

iSaac has a new friend...

I had the idea to do a friPod post regarding Spring/Summer playlists since these past few days have been sunny, warm and just all kinds of beautiful outside. But I know for me, it takes a good while to compose a playlist of my own doing without the assistance of iTunes’ Genius feature, which, I’ll admit, is a nice feature they’ve added. I was listening to a list created a few months ago, based from the song “Mo Money, Mo Problems.” For the most part, it captured the sunny and springy mood I was in, especially while driving, but I had a few exceptions I needed to skip, so the list wasn’t perfect. I considered posting that for today’s post, but I decided against it due to the imperfections.

Instead, I decided to post the top listened to artists iSaac has been playing. Technically, it’s a list of the top songs that my iTunes library has been playing. So it’s not correct to say it’s the top artists played since the list would probably look a lot different and include artists that I regularly have on heavy rotation. But the list of artists surprised me nonetheless.

The artists and their songs are as follows and are in the order of artists and their songs… You’ll get the point.

  1. Sam Cooke [(1.)"Nearer To Thee (Live)", (13.)"Yeah Man", (19.)"Bring It on Home to Me (Live)"] (C’mon son, no contest.)
  2. Curtis Mayfield [(2.) "P.S. I Love You"] (It’s no secret I love this song and this artist and he would probably make the list regardless.)
  3. Parliament [(3.) "Flash Light"] (This song tends to find its way on a lot of my playlists as well as be one of my favorite songs. This is the only song I have from this group.)
  4. Kanye West [(4.) "Champion"] (Another song that’s on a number of other playlists as well as a “go-to” song when I’m feeling like a champion. But I do listen to a lot of his other songs a lot of the time.)
  5. Fall Out Boy [(5.) "America's Suitehearts", (8.) "She's My Winona", (9.) "Headfirst Slide Into Cooperstown On a Bad Bet", (14.) "Coffee's for Closers", (16.) "The (Shipped) Gold Standard", (17.) "Tiffany Blews", (18.) "The Carpal Tunnel of Love", (20.) "Bang the Doldrums", (24.) "Disloyal Order of Water Buffaloes"] (Apparently I listen to a lot of this band.)
  6. Daft Punk [(6.) "Digital Love", (10.) "Aerodynamic", (11.) "One More Time", (12.) "Face to Face", (15.) "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger", (22.) "Too Long / Steam Machine"] (I actually wasn’t aware of how often I do listen to them, but I usually listen a lot when I’m working or driving.)
  7. Robin Thicke [(7.) "Magic"] (This song made the playlist because not only is it another song on many playlists, but I let it play on repeat for about an hour or so once.)
  8. Justice [(21.) "D.A.N.C.E."] (I listen to their album just as often as I do Daft Punk also while at work or in the car.)
  9. Tim Myers [(24.) "Brand New Day"] (Really? I listened to this song that many times that it’s the 24th most played song? Wow. I like the song but this is a bit much.)
  10. Stevie Wonder [(25.) "I'm Wondering"] (As an artist, I know I listen to him a lot more, but I know this song is on a few playlists as well.)

After reviewing the list, I can already count off a number of artists that should be on this list. As in, “the top 25 Played Artists.” I’m sure Alicia Keys, The Roots, John Legend, Joss Stone, Deitrick Haddon, James Brown, Prince, Michael Jackson and Jay Z would more than likely make the list. Maybe not in that order, but who knows? In any event, we’ll see how this list changes, if it does change, around this time next year.

fripodding and heavy rotation albums of 2009

Filed under: albums,friday,fripodding,heavy rotation,music,new year's — t. sterling @ 1:11 am

Just like last year, I have a Top Ten of what I call Heavy Rotation 2009. By the way, Happy New Year. These are the albums most played by iSaac and I this past year. Mind you, some of these albums actually came out last year, some came out a few years before, and some… much longer. I chose complete albums (rather than a few songs) that I’d let play mostly in its entirety. Since the majority of the album is great, I will limit myself to at most three songs per album. I choose three because that’s always been the rule of them back in the day when I (or my sister) would buy a CD. Why buy a CD for one song, right?

10. Carnival II: Memoirs of an Immigrant – Wyclef Jean

I’m not ashamed to admit I started out as a Clef fan post-Fugees. I loved the first Carnival album and heard good things about this album but never got around to purchasing it, much less hearing anything from it. I finally managed to get a copy by the end of 2008 and couldn’t stop listening to it since. To make my choices of favorite songs easier, I’d say the first half of the album contains my most favorite songs: Sweetest Girl (Dollar Bill), King & Queen, and Fast Car. Two out of three of these songs have music videos I was unaware of until months after memorizing the lyrics to them. Like the first carnival, there are many different types of music styles going on and it’s a fresh feeling. Plus the lyrics are good. I like the guest spots too. And I’m breaking my own rule but I like Touch Your Button for its complete Caribbean party theme.

9. Legend – Bob Marley

For a good majority of my life, I had only heard a handful of Marley’s songs. Mostly I would just hear One Love orJamming. It turns some of my favorite songs on this album are No Woman No Cry, I Shot the Sheriff and Stir It Up. The latter one being the most mellow and soothing to me during a stressful day at work. I immediately transport to some relaxing island. Most of the album does this to me though, and I like to play it every so often to escape the frigid New England… even when it isn’t that cold out.

8. Lotus Flow3r / MPLSound – Prince

Technically this Prince album is made up of 3 discs, and can be considered its own separate album each. I don’t mean to confuse you, but that’s how the album was sold in stores (at Target). I can’t really choose between which of the two albums is better, but I have figured out that Lotus sounds like a “daytime” album and MPL sounds more for the night. My favorite track on the Lotus side is 4Ever. It’s just a beautiful love song. Actually there are quite a few pretty ones on here. On the MPL side, it feels a bit more like the party or club scene with the first few songs. Dance 4 Me is probably the song I play the most on this album. Most of these albums aren’t necessarily seamless, but they work very well playing from one song to the next.

7. The Law of Confession Part 1 – Donald Lawrence & Co.

My sister and brother-in-law let me borrow this album, and for about a month I couldn’t stop listening to it. Not only was the music good, but the lyrics and meanings struck a nerve with me. Especially at that time when I was going through some things in my life, the album helped me spiritually. Oh yeah, it’s a gospel album. Somewhat traditional with the choirs and such… but it’s not really like choirs you might be used to. Back II Eden and There is a King in You are a couple songs that I played the most. This is a live CD too, just FYI.

6. Folie A Deux – Fall Out Boy

I remember buying this album around the end of the year, but couldn’t stop listening to it for a good half of the year. I also bought The Roots album around this time too. I listened to this album more so that’s why I’m writing about them. Don’t get me wrong, much, much love to The Roots. Notable songs I loved here: 20 Dollar Nose Bleed, Tiffany Blews and Headfirst Slide Into Cooperstown On A Bad Bet. To be honest, the songs released as singles would join this list… but I limited myself to three songs each, remember? Like most Fall Out Boy songs, the lyrics are intriguing, but so is the music.

5. The Blueprint 3 – Jay Z

I’m not really the biggest Jay Z fan. I like The Black Album and a few songs here and there. But I wasn’t expecting to pick up this album until I heard the third single, which I liked, and thus fulfilled the quota of album purchasing. Rather than tell you about the songs you already know, I will tell you about two that I really like. A Star Is Born is a song where Jay Z gives credit where credit is due. I think that song is pretty awesome just letting other rappers know that he has respect for them. J. Cole’s verse is nice too. Young Forever is just a very easy going song and a nice way to end a good album. I have yet to look up where the song is sampled from, but in the meantime I shall just enjoy it as is. Jay Z said he wanted to focus more on the instruments in these songs. I’d say he’d accomplished that and I approve.

4. Revealed – Deitrick Haddon

I had this album on a waiting list since forever ago. I feel really ashamed for such a thing because once I heard some of the songs for the first time, I was like… what was I waiting for? This is awesome! This is another gospel album but is not traditional gospel. There are influences of rock as well as hip hop/urban beats. I’ve already been a fan of his music for some time though. And before I forget, shout out to my Uncle Jazzy Jordon for being exec producer for this and Donald Lawrence’s album mentioned above. This album also touches me spiritually. Songs I like are Where You Are, Running to You and Ungrateful. This is actually another instance where it’s difficult to pick just three songs… so perhaps in the future this album will get it’s own post.

3. BLACKsummers’night – Maxwell

Have you heard about this album? Or the fact that this very talented artist has been MIA for the past few years? And the fact that this is only part one of a trilogy? I’m so excited to hear the rest of this but for now, I must say that this album is excellent. This is what soul music is all about. This is what music in general is all about. Now I’m having difficulty picked a third song to note out so I’ll only do two: Pretty Wings and Help Somebody. Okay… I’ll include Love You. There is some soul-pouring in that one.

2. 21st Century Breakdown – Green Day

The fact that I saw these guys in concert plays a huge role in why they are so high on my list. Not that they don’t deserve a big number or to be on my list at all, but you get the point. Once again, I’ll ignore the singles released because I liked those… so I’ll focus on the songs you’d need to hear directly from the album like the song burning ballad Last Night on Earth (which I actually listened to moments after watching a bon fire). I liked Restless Heart Syndrome. And I think my instant favorite was The Static Age. I’ll just throw in that when they played this song at their concert, I went crazy. I also loved when they did 21 Guns because of a giant graphic of a gun on screen behind them that would fire at key moments. That and the sparks falling onto the stage. But did I just claim a fourth song?

1. Michael Jackson

I don’t have a particular album. If you are like me, you have several album or just several songs to make up your own playlist of your favorite songs. I’ve had several before his tragic death, but one of my all time favorites since I was wee was Dirty Diana. I managed to pick up a few more songs after his death, a few that I had never heard or knew about but grew extremely fond of like Static Shock. Since this is MJ, I’ll just add two more. In The Closet I heard for the first time last year and grew attached. However I think the other most played song from him by me is P.Y.T.

So that’s my Top Ten of 2009’s Heavy Rotations. My guess for this coming year might start with some ladies named Alicia and Gaga. But we’ll find out this December or next January. Hopefully I’ll be more consistent in my posting. It’s not like I don’t have anything to write about… trust me, I do.

fripodding and heavy roation: the top 5 five

Last friDay, in the first of my Heavy Rotation series, I shared my top ten favorite albums that came out before I was born. Prince seemed to be a favorite, and it almost didn’t make it on the list being so close to T-Day. Anyway, I will show you 5 top album in 5 selected categories. Since this will be a list of 25 albums, I won’t comment as to why I think the albums are on top, and I will also hold back from sharing album cover art. If you want specifics as to why I listed what I listed, you know where the comment button is.

I rate these based on their listenability – listening to an entire, or most of the album without much skipping. These are albums I bought or acquired, whereas I may not listen to every track. My rule is I have to like at least 3 songs to buy the whole thing. Well, back before iTunes and file sharing existed. I still buy a disc every once in a while. Also bear with me, it’s not easy rating these in my own liking. I keep switching who’s at #1 depending on my mood at the time. And I sadly had to take some albums out because they didn’t rate well with the listenability meter. Shucks. Nevertheless, if you don’t have any of these albums, I highly recommend you invest!

TOP 5 GOSPEL ALBUMS
I must be honest, I leave out a lot of gospel music on my playlist and even here with the friPods. And it is indeed a music genre I enjoy, and sing practically every Sunday, or every other Friday, and occasionally on Thursday…

5. BBJay – Universal Concussion
4. Detrick Haddon – Chainbreaker
3. Helen Baylor – The Live Experience
2. Detrick Haddon – Crossroads
1. Kirk Franklin - The Rebirth of Kirk Franklin

TOP 5 LIVE ALBUMS
I was actually working on making a LIVE playlist taking all the live songs I had, and well… ya know… one playlist. But I realized I have a decent collection of live albums. There are certain elements you just don’t get with studio albums. Crowd screaming for one thing. And then it makes you wish you were there when you hear them react to something as if the performer did something or maybe it’s a surprise guest! Finally, this massive party is also a compilation of some of your favorite songs, sometimes extend or mixed into a medley with something else. Just pure awesomeness all around and your ticket is about $15 for the CD.

5. Curtis Mayfield – Live 1971
4. John Legend – Live From Philadelphia
3. Kirk Franklin – The Rebirth of Kirk Franklin
2. Daft Punk – Alive 2007
1. Sam Cooke – Live from the Harlem Club Square

TOP 5 SOULFUL LADY ALBUMS
I could just knock off the soulful part so I could include Sara Barellis. I also had to draw a line and take out Lauryn Hill who’d no doubt stick out at #1. And Alicia Keys I left out for the simple fact that I wanted some newcomers to get a little bit of shine. So here are some of my favorite leading ladies… and if any of these beautiful singers are reading, please give me a call so we can hang out some time.

5. Corrine Bailey Rae – Corrine Bailey Rae
4. Chrisette Michele - I Am
3. Solange Knowles – Sol-Angel & The Hadley St. Dreams
2. Leela James – A Change Is Gonna Come
1. Joss Stone – Introducing…

TOP 5 90′s ALBUMS
LET ME MAKE THIS CLEAR: this is a list of albums I owned then. And I’m also basing this list on how often I listened to them back then. I’m fudging #5 by including 2, only because I really didn’t own the album but borrowed it several times.

5. P. Diddy & the Bad Boy Family – No Way Out/Will Smith – Big Willy Style
4. Santana – Supernatural
3. Wyclef Jean – The Carnival
2. Lauryn Hill – The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
1. K-Ci & JoJo – Love Always

TOP 5 SOUNDTRACKS
Let’s face it, some movies wouldn’t be what they are today if it wasn’t for an awesome soundtrack backing it up. Or in some cases, it’s what drives it. I also cheated on this list for the #1 slot putting 2 albums together… but it’s not really cheating. The majority of both albums were composed by the same person. I would’ve included a 3rd album with the other 2, but I don’t own it yet. I’d also like to note that Idlewild from Outkast would be on this list, except that technically, they consider the album as just that, an album, not a soundtrack to the movie. Yes, songs from the movie are included on it, but you’ll also find a chunk of the songs from Speakerboxxx/The Love Below. Anyway, check out the movies that these soundtracks belong too as well as their awesome musical ventures.

5. Dreamgirls (Deluxe edition)
4. Superbad
3. Black Snake Moan
2. Purple Rain
1. Ocean’s Eleven/Ocean’s Thirteen

Yes, yes y’all!
